Hey everyone...
I had a big problem with my car yesterday... 97 2.4.. 90k.
I was pulling out of a parking lot yesterday, and accelerated a little hard to get up to speed with traffic... I let off the accelerator approaching a traffic light- stopped at the light.. Looked down & my car was off. .. I tried to restart it, but the motor wouldnt crank..
I looked in my rear view, and noticed a huge white cloud of smoke behind me... Something bad happened.
I was thinking it was the headgasket- but the car won't crank at all.... I only tried to start it once or twice, but it just made a loud bang noise & did nothing.
Im thinking I broke a rod or something, but I just wanted to gather some other opinions...
Thanks!
white smoke generally means blown head gasket or clutch. Wish I could be more help.

Well... Its an automatic- so no clutch... Definately engine related..
Im gonna pull the oil pan & look for some chunks
Check compression on all cylinders. Doesn't require you to crawl under car and sorta gives you a good starting point. OOps nevermind you said it doesn't crank.
Yeah, no crank so I'm figuring its seized up.
The first thing I'd do is look at the oil and the coolant. What colors are they?
Anyways if its seized up and you live around Chicagoland area I'll give you $50 for the car, I need a project car.

Haha... project car.... riiiiiggght...
The motor is coming out... Cylinders are full of coolant & the oil smells like gas. I dumped about a gallon of "stuff" out of the intake manifold.. I will make it stronger and run more boost.
happened to me on my trans am. broke the head gasket, cylindars filled with coolant, engine wont crank due to infinity compression (water isnt compressable). engine finally cranked when it snapped all 8 rods??? still trying to figure that one out.

I have a 97 2.4 and it did the same at 187,000 miles
Blown head gasket.
