rear wheel bearing
Tuesday, May 16, 2006 9:02 PM
Im not sure how it happened, but the rear wheel bearing on my car has play and makes the most god aweful metal to metal clashing noise. Im going to replace it tomorrow, however, time is extremely limited and I dont need unwanted surprises. Does anyone know the procedure to replace it. Will I need to disassemble the drum brake? Any special tools. This is on a non ABS car. Thanks in advance.

If like my '96 'Fire, the hub/bearing assembly is held on by 4 torx bolts (get a GOOD T-50 torx socket) and flanged nut (15mm). Take off wheel, take off brake drum, remove bolts (could be tight, get a good line-up of the torx!). One bolt will be hard to get out, no fear, will come out as you pull the assembly out (hard raps with hammer on stud mounting flange will break the rust grip. Clean bolt threads with wire brush and add drop of oil on threads only (where nut will be). Reassemble in reverse order. Here's the kicker, GM wants $350 PER hub!! I went online at RockAuto and got two (old car) for $280. They come WITH new studs already installed.
