Do you have any coolant leaks? Are you having to aad coolant? Sometimes youre rad could be plugged, The coolant could not be flowing properly cause the the rad, I would take a look at youre lower and upper rad hoses for cracks or bloated sections. With a good rad flush should undo alot of blockages.
Good Luck

Is the cooling fan running when it overheats?

I ran across this link a while ago, i have a 97 sunfire 2.4 so not sure if its the same.

I did this about 2 weeks ago cuz I was having the same problem and it works great.I hear overheating is common with these cars because the fan dos not turn on untill the engine is really hot.
Well hope that helps.

ok th hoses seem to be in good condition the fan comes on but not till the car is quite hot im checkin on that link of the fan switch im thinkin maybe it has somethin to do with the fan kickin in to late im considerin replacin the fan an seein if that fixes it
if you put ur ac on, the fan will come on
Exactly what I was thinking,Black cav if the fan was not working the AC on the relay may be bad or the fan it self may be bad.IF u turn on the ac and the fan does not engage I would check the relay for the fan and worst case straight wire the fan to see if it will work with 12 volts going to it.
the fan will not engage until the car is well above 195 degrees which is the center of the gauge. when the fan does turn on, you should see the temp drop back down to 195.. the fan will cut off, and the cycle repeats. I would try running AC for awhile and see if that fixes the problem. if it runs hot with the AC then its probably a fan problem. Usually a check engine light will come on if it is unable to see that the fan has turned on.
ok i found out today what the prob i think at least. i turned on the ac and the fan went to start but then it didn it spun very very slowly then quit quit all together now it wond come on at all also ill have pics of the car online soon its pretty stock thusfar cuz i just got it not to long ago but back to the problem at hand now the fan willnot come on at all even with ac on is this likley my problem?
Direct wire the fan motor to 12V. If it still doesn't work, then go to your local autoparts store and pick up a new fan motor. thay are about $12 locally.

The fan should come on & stay on as long as the A/C is on. Sometimes a light tap on the body of the fan motor will make it come on. If it does, it needs replaced.
Like what was already said, the best way is to run some jumper wires direct from the battery to fan & you'll know for sure. Just make sure you don't touch 'em or sparks will fly.
Also, I would pull off the old fan motor first & then match it up with whatever the parts store has.
I replaced mine w/one from Autozone & I had to grind off part of the housing to make it fit. PITA.
When I had to replace the fan motor on another car ('91 Century) after that, I went to Advance Auto. Perfect fit - no grinding needed. Just a FWIW experience.
As I recall, it was about $20.
