I have a 1989 Z24. In the last few weeks it has been running really rough. I knew it was a vacuum line issue. I traced it back to the egr valve. Stores around where I live don't have the egr valve in stock; I have to wait 5 days no matter where I go.
When I took it off the hose that leads from the valve to the exhaust, the compression fitting that held to the hose to the exhaust was all rotted together. Needless to say I lost that hose too (which is a dealer Item only.)
Is it possible to bypass that whole system? Can I put a cap in the exhaust (where the egr hose was connected) and plug the hole on the side of the intake? I know that I also have to plug the vacuum line. Is there any damage to the engine while doing this? It’s only to break down on emissions right?
Let me know what you think. I feel like I could fix my problem for $10 or have to spend $300 to put it back to normal. Thanks for the input.

Having the egr disconnected will not harm the car what so ever.As for the vac line u can leave it as it is bc it being discon makes no diff.As for the hose u described going to the exhaust side u could prob leave it as is unless u just want to plug it in the mean time. The only difference u may or maynot notice is ur fuel econ change slightly.U should b fine running it minus the egr in place working as it would.U have nothing to worry about, while ur egr is a little different than 1st gens it does the same job and yes I have disconn mine when it went bad, just left the vac line off until I replaced it and ran fine.Ok I hope this answers ur ?.
