Ok I've been looking around and I've found a few things here and there but I'm getting a little sick of searching and reading so can anybody help me out?...Well first off I'll admit I drive my stock sunfire pretty hard and I would like to know what I should probably replace engine wise so I don't break my car. And any info. is appreciated thanks.
if your gonna drive it hard make sure you do all your oil changes on time, if not early.
I've got a 97 Cavalier and I've been beating the ever living unholy hell out of it for the last three years. After 90,000 miles on top of the 106,000 it already had I run the motor out to redline constantly, toss it into corners like Tony Stewart with an attitude, drag raced, autocrossed, and have generally made that car my b*tch. I've burned up brakes, blown a few struts, went through two wheel bearings, several coil packs, and killed the final drive on the transmission but I have yet to break anything inside the motor. So I have no idea what you should replace because I think I'm pretty hard on my car and other than the transmission getting ready to go it holds up fine. I change the oil every 2000 miles, the motor gets a full tune up every six months whether it really needs it or not, the only thing I've ever neglected was the coolant which I just recently did, and I don't recommend letting that go. I did and it was NASTY. Just do the maintanance keep an eye on things.
Just one question. You said it's pretty much a stock Sunfire. Your profile says it's a 97 and it has an Ecotec. Did you do a swap or are we talking about a different car?
I'm thinking he meant 2.2 . For some reason some people think all 2.2 are ECOTEC's
which unfortuatly they are not. So you would be correct in the assumption that something is amiss.
Now in responce to your question we need to know what engine you actualy have under your hood so we can answer you correctly. Give us that and you'll get your answers.
Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.
Yeah sorry about that I must have did that when I first came to the JBO and didn't even know what the hell an ecotec was lol and now I don't know how to change it. But yeah you are right I just have the 97' 2.2.
Go into your Control Panel at the top of the screen. Under Profile/Registry click on Edit my Cars, then click on your Sunfire, and change the engine to 2.2 OHV in the drop down box. While you're at it, fill out any mods you have done so we can help you out.
As far as the engine goes, don't take my comment as literal advice. I haven't had any issues as of yet, but if you really want to keep driving that motor to its limits, I'd recommend checking out some threads from guys like OHV Notec and MadJack, and others who have a lot of experience with the LN2. I'm pretty knowledgable but I've still learned a ton from those guys. It's a tough motor no matter what anybody thinks of it, but it has its weaknesses, mainly in the valvetrain and if you ever go that far, the fuel delivery is a little weak if you want to boost. That's a whole other animal.
