People in the sand What to do about pitted windows
Wednesday, April 26, 2006 4:22 PM
Well i got limo tint all around on my cav and of course living in this desert in southern california my windows r pitted I wrecked my car like 2 years ago got a BRAND new windsheild its also pitted badly already, anyway thats not the probelm

Its not that bad unless of course your windows are black, then you seem to notice it alot.
I was just wondering if there is anyway to get the pits out any kind of wet sanding buffing anything that can be possibly done to windows?

Also while on the topic what about paint? I just got a new paint job and if its even windy outside the car sits in the garage but is there anyway to get some of the pitting out on paint either? besides repaint. Im thinkin maybe the pitting on a car only goes clear coat deep which could be wet sanded/buffed or something

Anyway my MAIN concern is with the windows anyone have any suggestions thanx

Not sure about the windows but use a clay bar on your paint, that should help out a bit.

Brandon, I work for a residential glass company. I deal with this kinda thing alot, except it normally happens when the glass is going through the tempering furnace. When I receive pitted glass, I use a hard-packed felt wheel on a custom made hand-held buffing machine and cerium oxide buffing compund. Does the trick every time. If i lived closer, i'd offer to buff and polish your windows for a decent price.

Brandon,
I've had that problem several times as my hobby is to restore 50's and 60's cars. Until the last few years glass for some of the less popular models was impossible to find and you can't see through pitted glass worth a crap. The Eastwood company makes a kit to polish window glass. I got one a few years ago and it comes with everything you need to do 1 large window. They also sell "refill" packs of the polish. It will do wonders on small pits / scratches but if it's a deep scratch like when the rubber comes off the wipers and someone runs them anyway that's a lost cause. Check out www.eastwood.com, they have all kinds of kewl stuff.

Your insurance company should replace a pitted windshield under your comprehensive policy (road hazard). Reminds me of when I worked for a trucking company and complained about not being able to see out of the windshield because it was pitted. They refused to replace it so about a month later I took a hammer to it. Oops, a rock must have jumped up and hit it.

God bless America.

yea im sure they will replace it.. for a 500 deductible when a brand new windsheild is only 100.00 (i had one put in 2 years ago) its not so much the windsheild more the front windows since there not as new.
