I have a 2004 cavalier and I have had a CEL for months now. I tried unplugging the Battery and it always returns. I had it scanned and it read "large emissions leak" or something like that. I will find out exactly what it was today. But I was wondering if this is affecting performance? I know sometimes CEL's do. Is it in permanent limp mode or isn't it a huge deal.
I took it to autozone and the guy said it was prob my gas cap. but I replaced that and it's still there...

get it to the dealer and get it fixed
not all cel codes effect performance
also this shoulda been in the maitanence
dam alergies , accidently clicked the button
also , you can not clear codes by disconnecting the battery , a code reader has to do it
but if the code keeps poping up , then you got a serious problem and it needs to get fixed
its an EVAP system leak
it will not change your performance
sorry for posting in the wrong forum. I just guessed because I was concerned about performance.
Ok, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't hurting my performance. Thanks guys. and as long as it isn't then I'll just let it go. I won't be taking it to a dealership because it isn't under warranty and I don't feel liked getting butt-raped, pricewise by the local dealer. I'll check some of the vacuum lines for now.
Thanks again.

its not a vacum line.... the EVAP system simple takes gas fumes form the tank and dumps them into the intake. There is a valve that opens to let the fumes flow into the intake. When the valve closes the evap system is surposed to be air tight. There is a pump that pressurizes the tank slightly and sees what the pressure holds at, if it looses preasure it knows theres a leak and throws a code...... ever heard about people getting a check engine light from filling up with gas while the car is running? Thats because the evap system just happened to check itself while you were pumping so it sees there a big leak and throws a CEL.
it could be anything from the solonoid to the seal for the fuel pump module
also being emission related , in some cases it might be covered longer than the 3yr 36k

i wonder if he leaves the car running when getting gas
actually, anytime you have a cel, your car goes into "limp" mode, and yes it does hurt performance regardless what the code is for
PhilioZ24... No, I don't. .... well I have,... but I usually don't.
Anyways. I doubt anything would be covered under warranty seeing how the engine currently in the car is from the junkyard.
So maybe I could track the prob down myself... Anything from the solonoid to the seal for the fuel pump module... well.... I better start reading up on that a little before I start touchin stuff.
Thanks guys
PS: on the intake I used rubber cement to put on a peice to hook a ...... well I don't know what it is for, but its a little hose/tube. on the intake tube. Could this maybe be it?
