front end alignment problem
Thursday, April 20, 2006 7:22 AM
I have a '98 Cavalier 2dr with 17" wheels. I bought it from my brother back in November. He had a problem with the front tires wearing badly, and so he had the front end aligned. He replaced the tires last summer, and they were still wearing badly, so before I bought it, he had them rotated (put the worn ones on the back and the still new-looking ones on the front) and had it aligned again. I've just had it algned for the third time in a year because the tires that looked brand new back in November already need to be replaced. Is there something else that needs to be done? I monitor the air pressure, and the tires seem to be worn evenly...no excessive wear on one side vs. the other side. AND no, I don't burnout...obviously I can't. It's a 2.2L with wide tires. I've even tried. It's impossible. LOL.

So anyway...does anyone have any ideas? I need to buy new tires but i don't want to shell out $400 on new tires if I'm just going to have to replace them again this fall.

Has the car ever been in any kind of accidents?

Go to a reputable shop to get your alignment done.

ud think after 3 alignments maybe one of the could be correct? .. once again if its ever had any front end damage there could be pieces messing with the alignment , knuckle (which was bent when i wrecked my car and the shop overlooked) or tie rods.

If the tires are just goin bald then maybe you are spinning them sometimes. Either that or they're just crap tires.

Wait how fast do you take corners and turns? Like a normal person or a NASCAR driver? Hi way on and off ramps too?

LOL, no I don't take corners like a NASCAR driver. For the most part, I take corners normally. The tires don't have the opportunity to spin excessively. The tires do a good job of holding onto the pavement, and my 2.2L is so gutless, I couldn't spin them if I tried. (and I have tried) I was kind of wondering if it could be the tie rod ends or ball joints. With 150,000 miles on it, I suppose I should go ahead and replace them anyway, especially since the bigger wheels probably put a bit more strain on them. Thanks for your input, folks.

I have a Pontiac Bonneville that is doing the same thing. The Left front side tire is wearing more on the outside than the inside.
Control Arm Bushing... that's something I'm going to check this weekend.

Question Bre...
How does it handle in the rain, wet roads?
the Bonneville does not handle too well on wet roads. the tires keep sliding to the left or right so I have to take it easy. do you have that problem?

If an alignment won't hold, it's either a worn or damaged component somewhere in the steering system. Raise the front off the ground and try to wobble EVERYthing.

I found the Pontiac Bonneville's problem.

Front Left tie rod damaged.

After replacement, the problem was gone and my front wheels are now straight.
