What's going on everyone..
I have 1997 Cavalier 2.2L and in the past few weeks, I've been hearing this loud screeching sound everytime I turn left. I took my car to my mechanic and he said that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced and that the brakes need to be replaced soon. So he replaced the the rack and pinion ($410) and when I drove it back home...the damn screeching sound was still there when I made a left turn. There is a soft screeching noise when I brake but I don't know why it makes that loud irritating sound everytime I'm turning left (without braking too). So what could be the problem?

i still say its the brakes. the bearings dont really make a screaching noise. they usually make a low pitched grinding noise of the ball bearings being chewed up. if he said he needs new brakes anyways. sounds like the indicator tabs are scraping the rotor when he turns. just like happend to me.
MIne screeched / erked when it went.

Jack up the car and see if the bearing has any play in it. My guess would be the brakes too.
God bless America.
That's a good price to replace the rack and pinion. Are you sure he did it...and why?

It was a good price? I don't really know much about costs of replacing rack and pinions, but if it is a good price then I assume it was somewhat cheap because he's good friends with my dad. Yeah I'm sure he replaced it because the steering of the car was pretty stiff, and when I got it back it was much smoother on turns than what it used to be.
The sound seems to be getting worse. I hope it is the break pads and not the wheel bearing..I'm not trying to drive on three wheels and crash into cars at the same time. I'll check it out whenever I have free time. Thanks for the info.

awsome. was it just the pads. or did you have to have the rotors turned to?
it was just the pads. thanks for the help.
