Iv decided to put a brand new cylinder head on my 97 z24 but before i start taking everything apart i need to get the gaskets. When doing putting a cylinder head on, what gaskets have to be replaced, and which ones dont ? on vehicles iv done in the past, i usually only do the head gasket intake and exhaust manifold
So if you have done this job before please help me !!!
also if you know of a good place to get the gaskets at a good price please let me know
Thanks
Had someone help me with my 2.2's head gasket job. Him damn good. Head came off WITH intake AND exhaust manifolds intact. That all made for a very heavy mass, but we only had to replace the head gasket (duh) and the valve cover gasket (due to age). I think you'll need intake, exhaust, head gasket at least. Consult Chilton's for good instruction, 2.4 job is far more involved than a 2.2. Good luck!
You can buy the gaskets individually, or in a pack. The pack is almost always cheaper, and you get all the ones you need.
I just did my head... 2000 2.4L... I used the following:
cam carrier to head, both intake and exhaust sides
timing chain housing to block
timing chain housing to cam carriers (2)
power steering pump
front oil seal (at crank pulley)
exhaust manifold to downpipe
coolant outlet housing O-ring
I re-used my intake (supercharger is o-ringed) and exhaust manifold gaskets... and the timing chain cover ones as well.
If you're in there to replace the head, do the water pump too. You'll need the gaskets for that as well. Depending on your mileage, you might want to consider doing the timing chain and sprockets at the same time, since it's all gotta come apart.
I did the cams at the same time as I did my head the first time.... so I did the cam carrier gaskets (red and green coloured) then.... I didn't separate the cam carrier halves this time, so I didn't need to replace those.
You'll also need sealant for the power steering pump.
