2000 sunfire 2.2 L engine will for no reason that I can tell throw the traction control off light and then start shifting hard. this last time the check engin light came on as well. any thoughts???
if the CEL came on, have the code read and fix the probelm

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
i had that problem sorta.
trac light came on while on the freeway and it quit downshifting to accelerate. when i got off the freeway i caught a light. it was idling really strange. when i hit the gas it seemed like the shift held FOREVER before it shifted and then it shifted real hard. finally got it paked. turned it off and started it back up and it ran fine...only did it every now and then (maybe once every other day).
turned out to be my throttle position sensor. i can't garuntee that thats your problem...but look at my symptoms and see how similiar it is.
mine is an 02 z24 with the 2.4 btw...but problem still sounds similiar.
GO PATS!!!
forgot to mention that my CEL came on only once but it didn't throw a code. not on the cheap autozone scanner or on a shop scanner...
GO PATS!!!
redneck that is exactly what mine is doing w/ the exception of running fine after a restart. I have also tried disconnecting the battery for 60-90 minutes and that didn't help either. I will check the throttle position sensor. thanks
I have a 2002 2.2L and have actually tested it to find that i had the same issues with the motor when there was a problem with the IAT sensor, and the TP sensor, could be either one, both arent expensive.
I only found this out when i put on my intake, i disconnected the IAT and forgot to reinstall it, thus giving me the same symptoms as you and Redneck. then i for some reason (curiosity killed the cat) i reconnected the IAT, made sure everything was running fine and disconnected the TP sensor and found that the car would do the same thing, only it would lag and choke for a moment when i stepped on the gas.
My prognosis is either the IAT or the TP sensor. i hope its nothing more.
good luck
IAT is easy, i think its less than 10 bucks anywhere. the TPS(at least for my year/engine) was a 40 dollar dealer exclusive part...
GO PATS!!!
I am not sure what IAT stands for. I assume that it has to do w/ Intake Air something or other
intake air temperature. if the iat is bad, the engine is going to be getting way too much fuel and run bad. most the time it just causes bad gas mileage, but might as well start there for as cheap as the part is.
GO PATS!!!
will the iat really cause the trans to shift hard? even going from N to D it would jerk the whole car and almost sound like it was going to strip the gears.
i personally don't think the IAT is the problem, it wasn't on mine. the throttle position sensor fixed my car right away, even when i put my old IAT back in just to make sure (kept the old one as a spare just in case).
GO PATS!!!
its not the iat that makes it bad.. its the iat sets off the ets light which interns makes it shift hard. mine did it once i couldnt figure it out, but mine was the sensor on the tranny had moisture in it.
Anyway if you seach or ETS most of the threads will have something to do with iat. but from what i understand the ets light can come off for thousands of reasons. Hopefully since you have traf off you can narrow it down a bit more.
First thing i would guess is replace a sensor that has to do with the traction control.
