I don't know if you're looking for easy, or performance. If you're looking for easy, and will not ever put a turbo on it, go with a 2.2 from 95-97. It's the same engine. If you want easy, and may one day put a turbo on it, get a 2200 or a 2.4, new wiring harness, and new computer.
If you want performance, but difficult, put an ecotec in there. It will bolt right in, but you'll need to swap a lot more electronics.

Again, for those harder options, research what you'll need exactly. I am by no means perfect. I probably left things out.

2.4 and 2.2 eco are pretty similar.

I would correct this..

For performance, either a 2.4 or an Eco is fine.

nobody is really answering my question, in my opinion cavaliers arent meant to go fast, i want the cheapest and easiest route to get my car back on the road. so if a motor from a 1990 bolts right up without any modifications i will do that as they are a dime a dozen. so which years will just drop right in.

Is that true?

Will the 2.2s from the early 90s Cavs fit 95-97 without switching any electronics (or other hardware)?
