idle bad, acceleration bad
Thursday, April 13, 2006 9:07 AM
I thought it was the ground on the battery tray, but it turned out that it wasn't. So now i'm stuck with the car idling at 1500-1800rpms and when i hit the gas even semi-hard the car will sputter and hardly accelerate. What would be causing these two things to happen? I know its related because last week I had the idle back down and the acceleration was perfect as well. Thanks for any help you give!

Try cleaning the idle air control valve and throttle body with Gunk intake medic ($8) from your local auto parts store.

I know its on the tb but can someone tell me which one is?

It's at the front of the TB and it has 2 torx screws holding it in place. If you look at throttle body picture #4 on the link above it's at the bottom left of photograph.

Make sure your motor is off when you remove it for cleaning.

it didn't fix my problem Mark, but hopefully it'll fix yours.

When at a stop light, my car idles at 900 to 1000 rpm. When coasting down a hill with the clutch in, it idles at 1500 rpm. I feel like this is normal, but I could be wrong.
Is your idle always at 1500 or is does it fluctuate like mine?

mine idles at 1500, and when im coasting its around 1800-1900. its been doin this for quite some time now too. a few times over the winter when i released the clutch, the car decided to rev to 3000 and stay there (have no clue what that was all about), but im thinkin its a bad TPS. and Andrew, your car sounds perfectly normal, thats what mine used to do before how it is now.

It would be worth cleaning the TB first. You never know - it could be all carboned up and not closing properly. I have 155 k miles on my 99 Z24 and it's the original TPS.
Anyway, should you change the TPS also, it should be pretty easy. It's to the right of the IAC on the side of the TB (driver's side).
Best of luck.

The TPS is about $67 at a GM dealership. I changed mine out, but it didn't help. I also scrubbed my TB, especially where the butterfly meets the sides, and all of the holes used for vacuum. I tried a MAP and IAC sensor too, but that didn't help either.

you might try this:
when the car is idling, take some brake cleaner or carb cleaner and spray around the intake mani and injectors and see the RPM's drop. that's what happened on my car. I'm suspecting a leak around the injectors. I haven't had a chance to replace the o-rings yet, but I'm going to soon.

Mark - The cause of ur problem may be ur alternator. when i had my camaro and the alternator died, it had the same symptoms as your car does right now. You may want to have it checked, i think AutoZone can test them.

As for my problem, i just cleaned out the TB, and nothing changed. Then i sprayed the TB cleaner around the injectors, manifold, and TB, the rpm's didnt drop, so i dont think there is a leak. Looks like im replacing the TPS.

A bad alternator usually turns a battery light on (dash), your gauges/accessories slowly give out , then your motor revs to compensate for the loss of power. That was my experience last summer.
