50,000 miles on my eco
Monday, April 10, 2006 3:08 PM
Gettin ready to hit 50,000 on my 2003 cavy ls sport and just wanted to know what kind of maintenance I should do on it. I know I flipped through a haynes manual one time and it didn't say to do much at 50,000 but what would everyone here do at 50k? Everything I will be replacing I will want to replace with better performance parts, and everything is stock right now.

BTW I tried searching for;
50,000
50000
50k miles
fifty thousand
and some other @!#$ with the search set to:
Search all forums/All Words/All Dates/All posts

So just answers and none of this use the search cockintheass @!#$

Thanks in advance for anyone's help!

I just rolled 50K in my 04. I would do belts and hoses just to be safe, plugs if you never have, oil change if its even close to due and a coolant flush. Yes I know that both the plugs and cooloant are supposed to be good for 100K but why risk it when they're both easy to replace.

I used to race cars, now I race myself.

Not to get you started again, but I'll leave my opinion if that's alright....

You have one belt, but I would'nt change it til you see it cracking. Why replace a part you don't need to.

Hoses: same thing. If you replaced all the hoses you'd be broke.

Spark plugs: Eh, change them if ya want, but when gm says they will last 100K miles, I believe them.

Coolant: 5 years or 100K miles.

change your oil and inspect everything. That's all.

Okay now for the opinion of a mechanic.....

Belts GM says that it used a special material and it is good for seven years or 150k. No I dont have source it is from Alldata ( if you know what that is), you cant just access their website without a membership and all
Anyways I would say 50 or 60k, maybe not a bad idea

Plugs I would at least remove them from the head and inspect, you will never get them out of there if you leave them in there for 100k, they will be stuck I bet you anything on it

If they look bad, replace them.

Whatever you do make sure they are still gapped correctly, overtime the eletrode wears usually only a few thousands of an inch but it still matters, and use anti-seize when reinstalling them.

Coolant hoses, unless they are leaking, dont bother

air filter and fuel filter if not done yet

your oil why bother until 3-4k on your current oil? It isnt like you need to change it because hitting 50k, automatically wrecks the oil

I do mine every 4k and its fine

Coolant, i wouldnt bother till 100k, I'm not touching mine till then at least

I would inspect your brakes, suspension and steering, make sure your ball jounts are lubed up.

Have you done a tire rotation recently, every other change i do one to my car

Hey thanks a bunch so far guys, lots of good info. My tires are stock as well. They are pretty much toast. Last time I had them rotated I had 5/32" of tread left. That is something I am going to need to do soon. Any recommended tires for the stock 16" ls sport rims?

oh yeah and you guys think the struts/shocks are still good? It rides OK, but not like a brand new car.

I got Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's on my LS Sport and they are a great tire. I picked up all 4 for $500 (205/55ZR16). They are a little expensive but you won't be sorry if you get them. I've had them for about 5,000 miles and they are wearing quite well, for a fairly soft tire. I only had them in the rain once, got caught in a downpour, and they were awsome.

I'm pushing 60,000 now on my 03. Just Synthetic Oil 5w-30 every 5K miles.

A can of seafoam wouldn't hurt either.

Replace the spark plugs despite the 100,000 mile claim their probably a bit dirty by now.

This car has been autocrossed since 10,000 miles religiously once 2 twice a month.

Translation (I've been running the hell out of it).

60,000 miles and going strong. I hope to have it boosted by 70,000 miles.

Awesome engines, and as long as you maintain them there is no "50,000" mile checkup. Provided your keeping up with brakes, all your fluids, alignment, and tire maintanence.
