Check Engine Light on Ecotec

I brought my car out of storage 3 days ago and have been driving it with no real problems for the past 2 days. But today i drove about 5 miles and the check engine light came on. It is running fine though. The one thing i believe it could be is a dirty air filter, i have an AEM CAI which is the only aftermarket engine part on my car. I never cleaned it last year and had planned on doing it when i took the tires off to clean it but i guess i will have to do it sooner.

Here are a few other things that i have noticed since i brought it out:
- A little worst gas mileage
- Black water or something leaking from my muffler (there was spot about the side of a soda can on my garage floor)
- Bottom half of exhaust tip is black (it was clean enough to eat off of when i stored it)
- The gas gauge is not acting right, like when i am driving it would go down to 3/4 tank then up to almost full then back down to 3/4 tank
- Also i put gas stabilizer in when i stored it, did it last year as well with no problems
- The oil is a little dirty for only having like 150 miles on it, i put fresh Mobil 1 in when i stored it

I am almost thinking it could be that i am running rich and have fouled the plugs and sensors. I plan on taking it to work when its not raining and have them hook up a scanner to it and check things out. So should i do a complete tune-up on it? btw i have a 2002 Cavalier LS Sport with 59,000 miles.

Try the o2 sensor, It could be causing alot of the problems.

Yea my friend of mine told me it could either be the o2 sensor or the vent valve that is up under the car by the spare tire well.

Does anyone think it would harm the car if i drive it with the light on? Cause i am supposed to go on a cruise with some friends tamarrow, but if there is any chance of anything being hurt i will wait till i can get to a scanner at work.

You should be ok with driving it.
Go and get the code pulled and it'll tell u whats wrong.
I had one tonight and it was the 02 sensor.

we just switched from summer to winter gas about 3 to 4 weeks to go. my light came on and it was a evap leak code. loose gas cap. cap was not loose but i did notice when i filled up the car ran allot better! reset the light and see if it goes off again.

see ya!

Thanks guys. I'm going to drive around a little bit to burn off some of the gas with stabilzer in it and fill it up with fresh stuff and then go to work and hook a scanner up to it and see what code it is. Then i'll make the necessary repairs. So we'll see what happens.

Well it was finally a nice enough day to drive the Cavi to work and i hooked it up to a scanner and pulled the code.....

P0440 EVAP

He told me it was probably the charcoal canister or vent valve. He cleared the code and i put some fresh gas in and so i'll see if the light comes back on. If so i'll be changing the vent valve. Does anyone if that is going to be a hard job or anything?

Ive gotten a code for the secondary o2 sensor about 5 times now it stays on a few hours and once i start the car back up its gone. It happens if i dont drive it for a few days usually.
