ok here's the deal
2001 z24, 4sp auto, just cracked 100k, and has weak motor mounts
all of a sudden a strange grinding-ish noise started coming from the front end.
almost sounds like a bearing,.. perhalps an axle.
sound seems to happen on each revolution of the tire/drivetrain
so this is what we did.
took it for a troubleshoot test drive,... go about 30ish, pop in neutral and do a mini slalom.
turn right sound is on the drivers,... turn left sound is on the passenger,.. wierd.
So,.. we:
replaced both bearings (from a newer jbod from the wreckers)
sound still there
replaced both axles (right from the parts store)
sound still there
rotated the tires,.. just in case, cause I thought the sound is almost a rubbing-on-plastic sound
Can hear it under accelleration,.. but not soo bad, decel seemed a bit louder than accel. The loudest is in neutral doing the mild slalom
I'm freakin stumped.
I even did tight turns,.. well circles in each direction and not a freakin thing,.. no sounds at all.
the sound:
*mild/muffled sounding not harsh*
crunch/thump, grind,.... crunch/thump, grind,..... crunch/thump, grind,......
btw: ball joints are good too. And non related,.. the sway bar end links are new too from changing the axles.
Is this tranny related?
can this be steering rack related?
Is the engine sagging and rubbing on something I didn't see?
Need some expert advice on this,.. car is 200kms away and I've made 3 trips out there to try and fix the prob. I'm totally stumped.

What kind of condition are youre tie rods in? You could have one gone bad. My guess would be as well youre motor mounts are weak, they for sure cause movement in youre drivetrain that could cause grinding problems.
