i have a 1996 Cavalier z24 with 160k+ miles i am lossing engine colant from the water air outlet and i am not sure what causes this... it was orignally dignosed as the water pump by my father before looking at the car... could the water outlet be cracked, the o-ring/seal shot, thermostat need replaced, or still the water pump???? I have purches a water pump, 180 degree thermastat and o-ring seal...
well i dont think you know wut it takes to replace a water pump on a 2.4.. is there coolant on top of your tranny? the water outlet is on the right side of the engine with the upper radiator hose attached to it. The seal is pretty common to go bad.. mine did its like 2 bolts to take it off.. take it off most likely the seal is shot.
Either way you said "im losing coolant from the water outlet" Then thats your answer replace the seal
I agree with brandon on that one.
it is replaced...
much easier then replaceing the water pump like expected... although i did purchase a 180 degree therm... and cant put it in... oh well
I have 155 K miles on my 99 Z24. Considering this is a common probem I think I will replace the one on my car as well before it causes major damage.
To confirm, is this seal commonly referred to as the thermostat gasket (GM part #3522676)?
no its not its a water outlet seal/o ring... if its not broken dont fix it. if it EVER leaks it wont cause any major damage
^^^ Unless the leak goes unnoticed, in which case, it can cause problems up to and maybe including blown head gasket.
if someone is gonna run there car without coolant, ignoring a low coolant light or checking fluids regulary shouldnt be driving a car.
I tried to tackle the job today. What a hard place to get at...
I am doubtful there will be anything leaking from that outlet for a very long time because that part sits pretty tight in the motor.
its tons easier if you take the 2 bolts off the steering pump and remove it first. after that its a piece of cake
