Sugar in the gas tank
Monday, March 27, 2006 10:31 AM
Well someone put sugar in my gas tank, I noticed it today when I went to put in some fuel injector cleaner and then fuel the car. I'm looking for any information on this. I'm a little nervous because I have an aftermarket fuel pump (inline) aswell as the stock one in the tank. Keep in mind I'm turbocahrged as well. I'm going to tear out the fuel filler tube and possibly drop the tank. Whats your opinons??? Thanks.

They tested the sugar in the gas tank on Mythbusters and found that it just pretty much sits on the bottom of the tank. It still might be a good idea to drop the tank and get it out but I wouldn't be too worried right now.

i knew a guy that had a built mustang, as in the engine was completely rebuilt and all kinds of perforance goodies, His ex g/f dumped sugar in the gas tank and it killed it within a couple weeks. Dunno how much she put in but true story.

Alright thanks guys, yeah I already picked up a locking gas cap. I took apart the filler tube part and there was a dixie cup full of sugar just in there, i also replaced the fuel filter. I'm going to drop the tank next just to sleep better at night. Who knows if any got in there, the filter didn't look bad so I dont think any got past the filler tube even.

sugar does not dissolve in gasoline .. it stays in the same state as it would just laying in a jar ...putting sugar in the gas tank would be no different than putting sand in your gas tank .. the fuel filter would catch it and simply clog the filter

i dont see how people can take your gas out is it even possible i bought a suction thing and i could not get more then a cup or so out of the line. id imagine to get any gas out of a car there would have to be some big thing that screws on the end where the cap goes and makes a suction throughout the entire thing i dont think just a hose will do it like the old days

Right, there is a siphon block in the filler tube, unlike "the old days"

Accordingly, the best way to gain revenge on someone through the "sugar in the gas tank" prank might be to simply play on the belief rather than the reality — just sprinkle a fair amount of sugar on the ground beneath the opening to the fuel tank of your victim's car and leave an empty sugar sack in a conspicious spot near the vehicle. Then sit back and watch your victim go wild trying to figure out how to deal with all that sugar he assumes is now in his gas tank.

Now that's funny.
