HELP! a.s.a.p
Saturday, March 25, 2006 8:18 PM
Alright I'll take all the help I can get on this one. So I just put a brand new altinater in about 2 nights ago and everything was good until tonight when I turned my car on and my car started making a knocking noise and figured it was my altinater. So I figured maybe a baring was a little bad but nothing too serious so I drove to a friends and later on, I go to leave and turn my car on and it's even worse so I start driving and my battery light comes on and then outta nowhere my power stearing locks up so I could barely even steer cz it was so stiff so I turned everything off on my car and tried to make it home. So I finaly get home and I pop my hood and the cooolants boiling and my belt is off the altinator pulley and then my coolanty just starts steaming so I'm so pissed right now I dont even wanna mess with it untill tomorow. And by the way I have a warranty on the altinator and my car too so ill see who pays for what tomorow I guess.

Well it could be either the alternator is bad itself internally.Or if u did not have the belt tension set properly being too loose or to tight could be a issue. But based on ur story the belt being too loose or the bearing inside the alter is bad caused the problem since the belt prob runs the water pump to I assume and there for the water pump not running caused the over heat due to circulation.I would take the alter back get a new one and start over.As long as u installed it correct and the alter is defective which in turn caused the issue.Good luck sounds like a simple fix even tho it reaked havock on u.

Spin your alternator pully and check for any abnormal resistance or noise. Check your belt tensioner too, if that is broken or weak then it won't hold the belt on properly.

You can't outrun the radio.

question i wanta know is why did you pull over when you first heard the noise? you might of been able to pin point the area i was coming from! it could be any items on that belt line. Water pump, Power steering pump, Alternator, Tension wheel. Was the belt replaced at the same time the ALT was? i could be worn out. Is the belt on right? The Tension wheel does wear out sometimes ..its rare but it happens ...with the blet off i would try spinning the wheels and see what is hard to move,,
