OK guys, I got an 05 sunfire, 5-speed.
I had the Revco 70-60-62 TB on my car, and I swaped it out for my stock TB. The idea being that I was going to goto the track tonight and see what the difference in my times were.
Anyway, I got the hose that goes fromm my valve cover to the AEM intake elbow, and noticed that there was a light coating of oil in the hose and on the inside of the intake elbow.
Then when I got the TB off, the back of the butterfly (facing the intake mani) also had a the oil on it. along with the inside of the intake mani. The top part of the butterfluy was clean though.
There was no noticable dirt mixed in with this oil, so that's a plus. But is it normal to have oil build up like this?
I do not have a CEL, and have not smelled burning oil. And the car has not acted up at all.
pretty sure its normal i notice the same thing. although on my butterfly its more of a carbon build up not too wet.. but on my breather tube to my intake its kind of moist. spray some carb cleaner in the t/b to clean it out
yes its normal. Its part of crank case ventillation. Some oil is normal blowby.
Not familiar w/AEM if oiled or not but when I had the K&N "filterchager" I would get some of the oil from that.

Old style AEM is, now all of their kits come with the dry synthetic filter.
I get them samething, in my cavalier as well, My mechanic friend says its normal.
The AEM CAI i have uses an oiled K&N filter, however this is motor oil I'm talking about, not filter oil.
Anyway, I know all you said that oil collecting on the TB is a normal thing. I know it a result of how our PCV system works...
HOWEVER it has also come to my attention that GM has put out a service bulletin for this problem with the Ecotec's. A guy in my car club works at a stealership, and said he will look through the bulletins when he has the time and see if he can find it . When and if he does find it, he said that he will get me a copy. unfortunately, i have no bulletin number or a date of issued, so this may take a few.
If any of you guys have access to GM service bulletins, any help finding this thing would be useful.
In the mean time, here are pics of why I originally posted this thread. All that back stuff is oil and you can see where I wiped my finger across it. Keep in mind, this TB has been on my car for about
15,000 MILES!!!
So yeah, to say the least, I'm considering a catch can. And it's also why I'm interested in that service bulletin. Also later this week when I have more time, I'll be pulling the intake mani just to see how much oil has collected in there, and to clean it out.
This also kinda makes me wonder if all those "P0420 - Catalyst System Low Efficiency" problems I was having was the result of un-burned oil collecting in the cat...
Sorry for the double post...
I know I said in my 1st post that the car was not acting up. the P0420 code was something I had been fighting with since about 2 weeks after installing my header, high-flow cat ( Magnaflow Cat PN:94035) & 2.25" pipes.
A few buddies and I thought it was because the sensor was to far into the exhaust stream, so we did the 18mm Spark plug Fowler mod to the after-cat O2 sensor.
Since that mod, i have not had the P0420 code return. However, un-burned oil making it's way to the cat would explain why i was having this "cat efficiency" battle, and not anyone else that was using the same cat as me.
