Was driving the ol lady's 2000 Sunfire lastnight and heard what sounds like a @!#$ty wheel bearing coming from the driver's rear. I just read the page that describes how to do the fronts adding the seal, but how do I do the rears? What am I facing after I get the drums off?
How much are new bearings for the rear and out of curiousity...the front?
What brand should I go with?
Should I just do the bad one or both rears?
Thanks!!!
Well I know that the front ones you are able to buy the entire hub assembly insted of just the bearing, which is nice becasue you don't have to take apart the hub, and if you have broken wheels studs at all, they can be relaced becasue the hub comes with all new studs.
As far as brand goes, I bought mine form autozone and have no problem at all with mine. and that was 3 years ago.

Good deal man, just need to know more about the rear specifically, but I appreciate your input!!!
Hey Juicez99cav. How did you know to replace the wheel bearings? I'm getting a strange sound when driving. Sounds like a loud hum when I drive straight or turn left. If Im turning right to an on ramp then the sounds is gone. Wondering if that means its my driver side bearing that needs replacement.
for a rear wheel bearing...just take the brake drum off.....there are four bolts holding the hub asm. on......un bolts those and put the new one in.....pretty simple really
the most common indication that you have a bad wheel bearing is a loud humming noise coming from that hub
When I did mine, I got O'Reillys to price match a $149 replacement (1 yr. warranty) for an Advance Auto $99 replacement. (1 yr. warranty) Problem is, the top side didn't clear the bracket for the brake cable so I had to grind it, thus voiding the warranty. O'Reillys said the manufacturer must not have thought it was an important detail. WTF??? Also, I still have some funky sound coming from the truck on that side.
Hey Jackal...im not sure if you've fixed the problem or not...but I was thought this website might help...basically a haynes manual, but free, on online...
Autozone>95-00 Cav>suspension>rear
How do u know which side is causing the loud humming? I know its definitly the front.
When I drive straight or turn left the loud humming is there. When i turn right, the humming disappears.
Does this mean my passenger side needs to be replaced? Just trying to figure this out as its really starting to bother me.
Thanks in Advance
If the hum comes when you turn left and goes away when you turn right it is more likely the right side. Think of which war your car rolls when you turn, and that's where all the weight is.
The rear hub replacements are really easy, U just have to pop the rear brake drum off, Get a wrench on the back of the drum plate use T55 torx bit, ( U dont even need to take the brake shoes apart). Just undo the 4 bolts, Then pop out the rear bearing hub, Clean out the inner channels with a clean rag, Then add the new rear outter seal, Add some HI temp grease on the seal and inner channels of the bearing hub, Bolt her back up, Its all done.
