3rd gen cavalier timing chain questions

hey everyone.. im new to the forum. technically, i dont own a cavalier, but i drive my gfs 2003 auto a lot. well, i try to pay attention to things, as far as maintenance is concerned, and i have a few concerns.

the engine is making a whole lot of noise.. kind of like my buddys gti vr6 before we changed the timing chains just this past week. now, from what ive looked up these cars use a timing chain, and i don't want to say that's what it is since the car only has 48k on the odometer, but god does it sound like it. i mean, i haven't looked farther into the problem... maybe i should check the oil, maybe im low and im not cycling enough oil into the top of the head. im not sure. fyi, the car was a rental car before, and you know what kind of condition a used rental car is going to be in. just looking for suggestions... anyone have any ideas?

pretty unlikely its timing chain but who knows one of the guide could of broke. are you aware of where it is? is the sound coming from there?

can u be more specific of the sound? i had 120k did the waterpump and checked the timing chain and replaced it because it had to come off anyway but it was still very tight and all the guides were in good condition.
