loss of oil
Sunday, March 19, 2006 4:42 PM
got a 97 Z24, and it seems to be that every month i need a new quart of oil. not leaking, definately no oil spots under my car, and as far as i can tell from the exhaust color its not burning, then again its not that much oil gone over a long period of time. i was told by someone that it could be the pcv valve, and honestly thats what i think it is, but when i went to autozone to pick up the a new part, they dont carry one. nor does pep boys or napa or anywhere else i can think of looking. the only other thing i can think of doing is goin to the dealership and having them take look , but that requires paying them to look at it. if anyone knows for sure whats goin on id appreciate it.

how many miles does it have?
what oil are you using? weight?
you probably cant find the pcv valve because theres not one are your car.

anyway depending on where you live id use 10-40w if ur burning alot
and put a can of this in at ur next oil change

thats about the best way id say your car is probably just worn out its not abnormal to burn oil with high mileage cars.

its got about 90,500 miles on it, which is about average. i use the recommended 5w-30, not exactly the top brand, matter of fact im not sure what brand. im def gonna have to look into the restore too. if you would really recommend 10w, ill do it next oil change, but if the restore will do it i dont forsee a problem with 5w. didnt know i didnt have a pcv, im a relatively newcomer to j-bodies and brand new to jbo, but im learning.

thanks for all the info man.

Check your coolant for oil also. To do this, make sure the engine and coolant is cold, it's very important that it is. Then take off the cap, and if there is oil in there it'll be milky white color, you could also check your overflow resevoir for the coolant.

I actually had this same problem on my Eclipse, wasn't leaking, burning, and there was no oil in the coolant, still don't where the oil went to. But check your coolant just to make sure.

My 2.0 burns about the same amount of oil as your engine. It doesn't burn enough to make the exhaust look blue but it still does burn oil very slowly. I switched to castrol GTX high mileage and use Lucas oil stabilizer and now it doesn't even burn a quart between changes. Make sure you change your oil on time too, oil that is saturated with engine deposits is more volatile and burns much easier.

i was reading something on this along time ago and most ppl with 2.4's have the same thing u have, loss of about a quart of oil between changes... so it seems pretty common, all u gotta do is check your oil between changes and add if need be... now my car 96 2.4 w/ 139,000kms has yet to burn ANY oil or lose any between changes so maybe im lucky...

if its a common thing in the 2.4's then ill just have to deal with it i guess. losing a quart a month seems a little high to me since i only change the oil about once every 6 months(more if only needed), so i will look into the restore to see if it helps or not, and possibly a higher weight oil... thanks for the input guys.

i wouldnt say its a common thing on 2.4's but a common thing in high mileage engines especially ones that havent been well taken care of. a oil change every 6 months? thats a long time! theres something about oil that decreases and makes it burn more after so many miles and after a period of time i think. thats why they say 3k OR 3 months.. the viscosity decreases and it doesnt protect as much as it should and it burns off easier. try to change it 3k OR 3months no less then 10-30w.

ive never really heard 3 or 3 suggested as often, at most ive heard 6 or 6, lol.. i'll def do it more often tho, ive only had the car for about 8 months or so, and i dont drive all that much, so it really usually is about every 3 thousand anyway. my dad at the moment is the one using it while im at school, so its not like it sits, but he only uses it for some mild in town driving. ive only changed it twice, because when i got it it was new oil. maybe ive been behind all this time tho. the only thing i dont get is that i just changed the oil 2 weeks ago, and my dad called me today and said i was missing enough where he had to out a quart in already. i dunno, hopefully doing a combo of all of these suggestions will help. ill look into it next weekend when im home and hopefully all that stuff will help. this is why i love jbo, anyone can get info by just asking. awesome. thanks!

6 or 6 i would never rec. this unless your synthetic. Def dont go longer then 3k your car is only gonna run properly as long as you take care of it. When you buy a used car you should change everything EVERY fluid except maybe brake. anyway just because you dont know and you learn about your car at the same time. You should use some high mileage oil next time. it will properly lube those older parts better id say a can of engine restorer. 10-30w high mileage castrol? or equal. and do it every 3k miles you should notice less burn off

If you're waiting that long for oil changes then that's probably your problem. Try the GTX and look into that Lucas oil stabilizer. I was kinda skeptical at first, but I talked to a lot of people I know and it's got a pretty good reputation. I used it and I've been happy with the results. Plus it's thick so it should help prevent burning.

I honestly wouldn't recommend putting anything but oil into your crankcase. Lucas oil additives have actually been shown to be harmful to engines. Sure, the little gear display on the parts store counter looks neat, but I'd bet that you can't turn the crank as fast as your engines internals.

If you were just dying to add something to your oil, try Auto RX. It actually works.

i Don't know i tend to stay away from problem fixed in a can. i would look into why your losing oil... maybe the valves ..yes even if your not seeing any smoke out the back! even get a compression check done. see if thats where you oil is going if so get a rebuild are used depending on the money you have or your plans with the car throwing a can of sealer of max life oil is a band aid on a stab wound my car have 406,000kms/about 240,000 miles and its never seen a addtive just changed the oil on normal times

honestly, i'd love to go the route of engine work, i did realize when i noticed the problem that it would probably involve some, but i don't have the money to do that . i wouldn't doubt the fact that it would be a problem with valves or even compression. from what i can see, the previous owner didnt take the best care of the car. i.e. dulling paint, some minor interior problems and the oil on top of it... i may be wrong on the reason, but the lack of maintenance records from 2 yrs. after purchase date to the day i got the car isnt overly promising... but like i said, money is tight. so for now any "temporary fixes" are gonna have to do or i could wait... im not sure, i need to look into this more, or if anyone else would suggest not to put in additives or anything else .
thanks for the info, when i get the money i will get this problem professionally fixed.

I've seen loss of oil on cars that were not well taken care of. Especially cars that had used Quaker State motor oil. I wouldn't run that junk in my lawn mower, bad stuff as it will crud up your motor I've torn down motors with less than 65,000 miles that had used Quaker State and almost had the use a chisel to get the crap off. There's a lot of good oils out there, and a regular change of 3000 miles or 3-4 months is the way to go. I've ran cars/trucks 200,000 miles with that schedule and only after approx 175,000 do they burn any oil. Get some Valvoline, Havoline, Castrol, Penzoil in a 10w-30 change it regularly and it may improve. Good luck.
