my grandmas neighbor has a junkyard, and i found a grand am with a HO quad four. i offered him $100 for the motor, tranny, ecu, harness, everything id need for the swap into my 03 fire. he believes the headgasket is blown, so is that a decent deal on it? is the swap even sensible or am i just wasting my time and money?
you want less power then an eco?
Less power than an eco??? Hun... a 2.3 HO has WAYY more power than an Eco. HO's were rated around 180/180 or 185/180 hp/tq something like that.
And $100 if it's just the headgasket... go for it. Good deal!!!
thats what i assumed. im going to talk to him again ASAP. i believe its a 94 or 95 so its OBD-I. i think i might get a little blown up metro or suzuki swift and make a monster. a 2.3 with full bolt-ons in say a hatchback metro would be good for what? mid 14's?
how do i change my belts! i cant change my engine belt i cant figure it out i looked in the manual it gave me nothing its like they forogt to add it

the 94 Ho had 170hp and 160lbs of torque.
The Ho never had more than 160lbs of torque. 180hp in 90-92 and 175hp in 93.
A 2.3 with a set of W41 Hot cams 2 with a W41 chip, header, CAI and a ported head will run you in the low 14 high 13's in a Geo. Maybe lower with a good driver.

you cant swap that into your obd2 vehicle... back dating is illegal
for that price, get it and if you dont use it, sell the parts!!!
I NEED the downpipe
(hint! hint!)

Yes it is. And so are half of the mods we do. Removing the EGR, taking off a cat, removing the second O2 sensor, hell, using any header or intake that isn't specified for use on public roads (most headers aren't), technically, is illegal but there's loop holes around everything and nobody really cares unless the government pays them to care.
If you want to do the swap, I say go for it. $100 for a W41 is a sweet deal even with a bad head gasket. Just make sure you fet the ecu, harness, all of the sensors, tranny, all of it.

It's not a W41. It's an Ho.

My bad I thought the HO WAS the W41... So what's the diff between the two...
The Ho had 180hp and 160lbs of torque. The W41 had 190hp and 160lbs of torque.
The W41 had better cams and a better chip. They were ONLY in some 91 Calais 442 and in the 92-93 Achieva Scx. About only 2500 W41 were made and 7 C41.

Yeah, I had an Achieva SCX when I was in high school, but I didn't know much about the motor back then. All I knew was it was pretty fricken quick. Thanks for clearing that up. So here's a question, I've been talking to some of the other JBOI members, and they're trying to talk me into ditching my LN2 for a 2.4 but I don't know what one I want. I know the H.O. (and now the W41) make more power than the 2.4 LD9, but what's the better way to go? I mean as far as the motor itself goes. I know the facts about the OBD and tranny and what not. But as far as reliability and parts availability, what do you think? Sorry to thread jack, but since it's on the topic...
no prob. man. thats what this place is for is information. im gonna offer him $175 for the whole car so i know i get everything i need
There's a bit less part for the 2.3 but you have to search. The 2.3 is not the kind of engine that you go and go and go and only do oil change. You need to listen to it and talk to it and always check it.
It's not less reliable when you check everything. It's just not like a 2.2 where you just change the oil and go. I've race a full summer with my Ho with 230 000km and nothing broke. The engine is really good and can take alot of abuse when taken care of correctly.
I was doing my oil change EVERY 2500km witch is 1500miles for the Us guys.
You CAN'T let it heat up. it can stay around 180° (witch is the 2.3 temperature) but over 210°, things WILL let go. A fan switch is a must.

I noticed that heat problem when I had the SCX. Actually, that was why I ended up getting rid of it. In the span of one summer I went through two thermostats and a head gasket because the damn thing kept getting too hot and nobody could figure it out. Too bad because I really liked spanking friends' cars with an Oldsmobile.
