Anyone else getting shocked by their cars?
Tuesday, March 14, 2006 10:46 AM
Maybe a dumb question - I AM familiar with static electricity...

But whenever I get out of my Cav it shocks the CRAP out of me when I touch metal, sometimes when I put the key in.

Is there ANY chance that this is due to the fact that I have a ton of LEDs hooked into every available spot or just static? What shoes make this worse? Does wetaher affect it?

I mean, it shocks you so bad that my wife doesn't even like to ride in my car anymore - she has a Cav as well and swears it never happens in her car.

Anyway, I was bored and thought I'd address this issue and see what my fellow minds of JBO could come up with.

Mine stopped doing it when I put leather seats in.

It happens in every car with cloth seats, usually more so in winter/cold months.

make sure you shock yourself before u put in gas, the shock could ignite the gas. I saw something on tv about it, some firefighter did a demonstration, he had the gas pump in the car filling up, and he touched somewhere on the car by the gas door, he shocked it and it ignited, then he pulled it out and he was shooting fire out of the pump.

Mine lays into me hard on cold winter days, usually when I touch the screws in the door handle, it gets ya right on the finger tip and makes your hand numb. Its still not as bad as in the ear though, that would suck, hahaha.

LOL. This is easy guys. My car, of course, does this too. You just need to ground yourself out first. As you are getting out, before you move your body, grab the top of the door frame. Then step out. I have been doing this since it started to shock me and now it doesn't!! Try it and see if it works.

Yeah..mine shocks the snot out of me during the winter months. I can relate to the screw in the inside door handles...whoooo they get me good! I usually shut the door with the plastic piece now to avoid spikin' my doo. Ha!

Mine did this from time to time. Didn't matter what car I had as they all had cloth interiors. The remedy is to hit up the grocery store and grab a can of static guard. Lightly mist the seats (do this once a month) and you should be good.

You can't be serious?

The reason why you get shocked is because you build up a static potential on your body. You need to ground yourself as you get out, otherwise you'll ground out when you touch the door and get a nice shock.

i just put my finger on the screw in the door handle and step out, thus grounding myself and no shock...

The guys at CarTalk addressed this problem. They say it's due to different compounds in the rubber of our tires. They don't inherrently allow normal grounding as they have in years past. Something about higher silicone content, or something.

Try placing a towel on your seat bottom. It acts as a buffer between you and the seat fabric and eliminates the charge buildup as you slide out. Works for me, anyway.

I once got shocked and fell to the ground in convulsions, during which I had a vision as to how NOT to get shocked again.......so I awoke and realized this vision and ever since I just ground myself on the way out of the car with the back of my leg on the door frame...works like a charm.

It happens to me more when it's really humid. Just touch your car keys to something metal and that should take care of it.

one guy mentioned different rubber compounds in our tires.....doesn't make any sense to me, since i'm not overly intelligent, but now that i think about it....since i got rid of my RSA's and put on Hankooks the problem has disappeared.

odd.
