1-detach cable from negative terminal on battery.
2-remove the drive belt.
3-disconnect the electrical harness (and battery charging cable? if you can get at it; may have to wait til step 4 is done) from the alternator.
4-remove the 3 bolts holding the alternator on.
5-If your new alternator doesn't have the pulley, use an *impact wrench to remove the retaining nut and my pulleu just slid off but some alternators you need a pulley puller. *You'll never get that nut off without air tools or damaging the pulley.
6-install pulley and nut on new alternator.
7-installation is opposite of removal.

Just a note though, I had to take the bolts out first then kind of tilt the alternator to get the wires out. Overall though very easy. Good luck... -2000 Z24-

Ok, now I have gotten so far as to find out I need to use a 15mm socket on the tensioner bolt to get slack in the belt. Half the post say turn the bolt towards the firewall and the other half say turn it towards the front of the car. Anyone know which way to turn it for sure.

Ok, I finished the job. For anyone that wants to know: It was way easier to just push a broom handle against the idler wheel swing arm (its the wheel in the back that looks like its bolted to a swing arm). By pushing the arm way down it gave plenty of slack to slip the belt over the alternator, and that waqs all I needed to do. So here is step by step intructions:

Take the three bolts out that hold the altenator in place.

Unplug one electrical plug.

Take off one more bolt that holds on another wire.

Now wiggle the altenator around until it comes out.

Put the new altenator back in place the same way you took the old one off. Do not put the belt one in this step.

Now that all the bolts are back in and the plug and wire are hooked up, take a broom and from the front of the car silde it in until it is up against the tensioner bolt swing arm. Push on the swing arm so that it swing down toward the floor. That should be enough slack to get the belt up over the altenator. There now your done.

Boy I wish someone would have told me how to do this before I started, This 15min. job wouldn't have taken me 4hrs.
