Well... like the title says... whenever my car is going backwards at all, i get a "tick, tick tick" that speeds up as the car speeds up.
I have narrowed the following:
- It does it whether the motor is on or off
- It does it whether it is in gear or in neutral
- It does it whether the clutch is in or out
- It does it whether the brakes are being applied or fully disengaged
- It seems to be coming from the front of the vehicle
u have a baseball card stuck in ur spokes

nah my car does the same thing when i back out of my drive way its the center cap on my rims.. for some reason it clicks i have no idea why have someone push ur car or drive it back and listen to where its coming from do u have aftermarket rims do u by chance have a center cap?
you hear a ticking you say, your car will self destruct in 5 more ticks.
Does it do it if you jack it up and spin the tires by hand?

I know I need to do that... I just haven't had time to put it up yet... maybe this weekend when it's nice out

It's odd though... it just started... It has to have something to do with the wheels/tires/brakes... And Brandon, I have stock 16" GM wheels...
Check that first and while you've got the front end up in the air just take a look around to see if you can see something out of place.
Good Luck.

i had a problem like that once... turned out it was just a rock stuck in the tread

Normally its ball joints, the first sign they are goin bad is a clicking sound in reverse.
Next thing I'd do is take a pry bar, see if you can pry up and down on the wheels. There should be no play at all.
Also you must support the vehicle and take the load off the lower ball joint to do the test.

my car only has less than 13k on it... could joints be going bad already???

Well you asked for an opinion, you didnt say what car you had, what year, or miles. I was giving you something that normally happens.
Ball joints normally last a long time, but just the first thing that came to mind.
13k dont you have a warranty?

Ball joints don't go tick tick tick while backing up. They may go pop or bang or even one tick but they won't keep doing it once the suspensions load has been changed.
Jasons got a point it could be a rock or a bolt stuck in the tire. Did you look at the tread yet?

I do have a warranty.. but you know how it is... I have to call in advance, drop it off at 7 AM for them to start on it by 2 PM... then it won't be finished until 5-6 PM... I have to drop my car off for the entire day... If it were something small, I'd like to just do it myself than deal with those arseholes...
Yes its prolly a rock in your tire. Relax my sunfire gt was the master at aquiring rocks. Every week in the summer i would pick them out. If it is more serious relax shes under warranty.

only thing is, I'm always worried about wheel/tire/suspension stuff... not so much because it costs a lot to fix, but that it could cause an accident if the stuff breaks at highway speeds...
