My buddy has a 1996 auto Z24 cavalier they are trying to say that its a 96 only part, obviously must be differences in motor mounts. Anybody else conquer this minor detail? There are some nice 98 malibu motors there that I would like to grab to put in it.

Are you talking about using another 2.4L motor to replace the one in the car? I just had the motor replaced in my 96 Z24 auto this week. I used one from a 96 Sunfire GT. If you use another 2.4L make sure its from 96-98 for the best results. They will all fit as far as I know but the 99+ ones had some different sensors or something. It can be made to work but its plug and play if you get the right years.
Now you can use other engines, such as V6's, ecotecs, etc... but you'd have to modify the motor mounts or weld up your own not to mention swapping out computers and wiring harnesses.

99+ are OBDII whereas the 96-98 2.4L motors are OBDI I believe...
Knowledge about everything and yet an expert of nothing!!
Jack of all trades.
^ be sure of what you say before giving bad information. all 96+ were OBDII except some rare case. the 95 2.3 auto were OBDII.
The thing is, 99+ 2.4 didn't had an EGR, They had high impedence injectors and a different knock sensor. Some other things may apply like different head casting.
If you take a 96-98 2.4, there won't be any problem.

95 and up was all OBDII, 94 was the year it was phased out, and DTC's were made all standard codes, instead of all make specific codes
96+ were OBDII. the 95 was teh mid year for OBDI and OBDII. The only OBDII in 95 were the 2.3 auto. Get your info straight.
95 J had the OBDII port with an OBDI ecm. Easy to check, they had a removable E-prom.
