Alright about a month ago whenever i started my car I heard a "tap tap tap tap tap which i guess is normal for the wintertime when the car warms up, and then it would go away. Now I am constantly hearing a "tap tap tap tap" noise that sounds like a valve tapping, the more throttle I give it the faster the taps are so I can safely assume it's valvetrain related. But today, first nice warm day in awhile here in PA, the noise seems to be louder than ever and does not get any quieter, it's loud enough that I hear the noise echo off the trees when I drive through my community. Any help qould be greatly appreciated, I have a 2000 2.2 base cavalier.
Thanks,
Eric
Had the same thing with my 2.4 and is ended up being a wrist pin went bad. I was still under warrenty at the time and they replaced the motor.
Not saying this is the same tip of problem but doesn't sound good bub. Are you able to pin point it any better in the engine bay where it is coming from?
Good Luck and I hope for the best,
Chris
Also, I know this might not/should not be directly related, but while searching for the origin of the sound I came across this whole in my header which up until now i thought was just a bad gasket between the header and the downpipe (would it still be called a downpipe even though it's not a turbo engine?).
That could make the ticking sound too. As exhaust pulses leak out and hit the other tubes. Oh yeah I've seen it happen before. Replace / fix the header first and see if the ticking doesn't stop.
Good Luck
Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.

Can you tell me more about this wrist pin? I had a very similar problem with my 2.4 and I tried everything with no luck. Redid the bearings swapped out the cams from another motor... It sounded high in the engine but I couldn't find it...
Eventually I just bought another engine but I'd love to know if my other one is salvagable?
Thanks, I'm gonna order a pacesetter header off of the group purchase tomorrow night when I get paid so hopefully sometime next week I'll be able to replace it and hopefully it'll be quiet again
