Steering Gear

I have an 05 sunfire, been having problems since mid-december. I keep hearing the crackling noise when I turn my wheel, I can hear it nice an clear when Im backing out or turning into a parking spot. Ive taken it to the "dealershi*t" about 5 times now. Im still having the same problem. 1st time they checked it out and ordered the part. 2nd time they replaced it. 3rd time they checked it out again due to the fact that I could still hear it. 4th time "big shot tech" checked it out, and told me he couldnt hear anything. 5th time They aligned the steering gear.

I CAN STILL F* HEAR IT!!!!

Does anyone else have this same complication? or does anyone know why?

does it feel like its in the column? the intermediate shaft has been known to make a click/pop sound during slow speeds, its attached from the rack to the bottom of the column and it's splined with grease to lube it, if the grease wears out, or there wasn't enough there in the first place, you'll hear and feel the interference in the splines that the grease should've taken up. there is a bulletin on this, dealers are to lube or replace the shaft. there is the possibility of a bad gear, but you would have poor steering if it was that bad. There was a bulletin for front sway bar noise as well, can't remember if it applied to 05's , but the bushings were supposed be replaced, what did your dealer change???

go to a different dealership, your warranty will work at any GM dealer.

Find another J owner nearby you to see if they can hear it. It may just be normal...

Right... I have been to another dealersh*t, dude checked it out did not even get under the car. He just said that noise will be heard when you make a tight turn. The third time when I took it up there; Suppose'ably they had greased it up.

First I thought it was the bushings, but it sounds like its the colum itself.

I have a 97 that did this right after I changed the hub assembly. Turns out I had a defective new part, replacing the hub assembly on the side that was making noise fixed it.

Mine only made noise at slow speed, like you've described, and only while turning the steering wheel. Driving at normal speed it was quiet.

I experienced this when my car was almost new. The problem is located at the point the steering column reached the rack and pinion. You have to llose the screw and re-acommodate the pug. Then, thight it again

I just got the car about 4 months ago. I just didnt think it would be something I would even have to worry about at this point.
