well i keep getting this code over and over and over.. "egr pintle position sensor" is what it comes up as although my code reader says "aux. emission controls"
anyway i switched the EGR from one of my cars to the other and i still get it.. i have no idea whats causing it if its not the acutal EGR itself. The sensor is plugged in and i see no broken wires. any suggestions?
Did you switch over the pintle position sensor? lol, i just like saying the word pintle
lol if i knew where that was? or if there even is one. i guess your just saying that because its obvious to say? of do u really know where this pintle position sensor may be??
lol, nah just wanted to say it. That's the first time I've ever heard of that. I got rid of the EGR on my camaro so I didn't have to troubleshoot issues like this
P1406 DPFE Downstream Hose Off Or Plugged
P1406 EGR Valve Pintle Position Circuit Fault
This code is typically caused by carbon buildup in the EGR valve. The carbon deposits prevent the valve from closing completely. After removing the EGR valve, clean the pintle seat area of the valve and the corresponding passageway in the engine.
P1406 EGR Temperature Sensor Range/Performance
P1406
Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Position Sensor Performance
well after searching online i found thee other meanngs.. maybe a hose could be clogged? but i have no idea how to remove them or anything else is there an actual sensor other then on the valve itself?
EGR valve could be toast. AIR valves on our camaro's do that a lot as well, but we don't have them on the cav's. Needless to say, if you took it to a shop, they'd most likely replace the EGR valve. I'd probably call up GM and see how much they are, then go from there. If it's cheap, I'd replace it. Or, if it's easy to get to (don't know, haven't looked) I'd check it out and try and blow some compressed air around in there.
Actually, look what "Ron Love" just posted in this thread. May be the answer to your problems, conveniently. Looks like the EGR valve is easy to get to AND cheap.
wow can you READ my posts before you reply?? i just said i have 2 Z24's i switched THE EGR VALVE from one car to another reset the code and got it again obviously isnt the actual valve
Whoaaa there buddy. You said "anyway i switched the EGR from one of my cars to the other", you did not say you just switched the valve. Therefore, I interpreted it to mean that you switched over the whole setup, including the tubing and sensors. You obviously meant to say EGR valve, which you just explained. I'm trying to help you here, man, but don't fault me for erroneous explanations on your part. Easy how you talk to people.
well i was on that post as well I don't know sunbirds all that well or 2.4's but on my 96' 2.2L my car choked up a code telling me the I.A.C pintle and so on This was after doing a small tune up plugs and air filter i had the throttle body tube off and sprayed some throttle body cleaner down the hole cleaning the carbon crap out. I later found out i didn't clean it just pushed it back ! Making the code by filling up the pintle a pintle looks like a bullet wrapped with a spring around it. It sit inside a thremosat shaped hole behind the throttle body .two screws and it's out clean it lube the o-ring throw it back in clear the code. there's more mambo jumbo on that if it still doesn't work using a ohmmeter anywaysss.. Now the E.G.R. associated engine problems are rough idle, stalling at idle, etc . the I.A.C and E.G.R. work pretty much the same one works with fresh air at idle one works with exhaust gases upon command from the PCM but fixing it .It will need to be taken to a deal where like someone here said they'll just replace the whole part Try you local scrap yard thats open to the public the walk -in yard and find a 2.4 and grab it its small enough to fix in a pocket or just pay the 10 bucks at the yard (thats if the dealer wants a arm and leg) don't forget to clean out the hole with cleaner before reinstalling. One last thing i know the vacuum lines on top of the throttle body 2.2L (2.4L unknown) are made of plastic and break very eazy and will set codes off as well take a quick look on those while your under the hood

Remember it's not the PVC Valve thats not a sensor, Just checking^^^^^
The EGR valve is mounted on the intake manifold and looks like a small motor sitting on top of a thremosat metal looking base and has two mounting bolts (Not screws)

i know what exactly a egr valve is i switched egr VALVES from one car to another.
it has to be some kind of egr hose that is clogged or something
then why would u be telling me to get a new egr..lol ok so what "if" its p1406 pintle position sensor..
like i said yestarday 1058pm check the pintle and housing clean it if you have a OHM meter the specs are in any hanyes/ chilton manual (5 ohm's after warm up i think) for what the volts should read if its working right if it is then thats one down you might have a hose leak check the emissions control system sticker on your car for routing of hoses
Just trying to save ya a buck and its just advice ...

and where is the pintle and hosuing and what do u clean it with.. ive taken the actual egr valve it self off and cleaned it so its nothing to do with the valve itself
