HELP me change my oil please!
Tuesday, February 28, 2006 9:03 AM
OK, so I'm 17, I've changed oil on cars before, but this is the second time doing it on the Cavalier. It's a 2200 so as you know the oil filter is hidden away. Last time I convinced my dad to change the filter for me, and he obviously did it up way too tight.

Basically, I can't get the filter to budge at all. I even stabbed a screwdriver through the filter to get some leverage but that didn't help at all.

How do I take the filter off?

I was happy when I heard my car ran 10s. Then I found out that was 0-60.

Pop by advance or autozone and get a filter "socket". it will attach to the end of the filter and use a 3/8" ratchet to turn it. I had one stuck on an old 4x4 several years ago and
couldn't get the filter off. Spent $3.99 and off it came.

Be sure you get the right size if you do that. I use a filter wrench on my 2200. It is VERY tight, but works everytime. It usually ends up somewhat crushing the end of the filter but it comes off. I picked one up at wal-mart.

lmao...

im a pro at these. i work in a shop, and im one of the few who can always get these done cause the other guys get too frustrated.

get a filter band wrench. slide under the car and place the band wrench on the filter. slide your one hand up by the CV shaft and hold the filter wrench tight. slide your other arm up by your wheel. there is enough room between the cv joint and the lower control arm to get your hand in there. use that arm to move the wrench, while the first one is just holding it tight. you will only be able to move the wrench about a quarter turn each time, so you will need your first arm there to hold the band of the wrench tight.

have fun, if you need more help, i might be able to take some pics for you when i do mine in a few days.

Injection is nice but id rather be BLOWN!

Hey everyone, thanks for the FAST replies! Very impressive.

I copped out and bought a filter socket thing for $6.65 at Carquest. Worked great, had the filter off in less than five minutes with that. I took the (new) filter with me because there are four different sizes.
