i have a 82 pontiac j2000 1.8 tbi.
i was on my way to work one day and the car just died at a stop lite.
wouldent start or anything.
it is my first and only car, nothing else compares to it in my eyes.
i did the timing belt, plugs, wires, distributor, spark module, coil, gas filter, and re-wired the fuel injection and just for the heck of it head gasket and valve seals.
the timeing belt wasent striped or broke but it may have skipped a notch thats why i put a new one on.
now, when i turn it over it backfires sometimes and the tbi catches fire but thats it.
it wont crank over.
any ideas from someone more skilled than me would be gold.
thanks for your input!!
could anyone please put in some kind of sensor or anything they know of?
i dont wanna gut or junk it ...
It could be a misplaced cable on the distributor cap or the distributor itself not placed correctly both situations cause backfires (wrong firing order of cylinders) good luck...

thanks, ill double check the firing system, i just re-did almost everything on the car but it could still be wrong..
heres my baby
hey it's a keeper.. sounds like the timing was moved ...ya said this happened right after you changed the timing belt? if theres flames coming from your tbi it's a no brainer the engine is not taking the gas meaning the valve is closed when the injector is spraying ..The timing is off ..backfire is cause by...your emission controls not working,Faulty spark plug wires or coil, problem with the fuel injection, intake manifold or vacuum hoses, burned valves.......or incorrect valve timing hope it helps

ill fiddle with the valve timing a bit more, someone probly took off that pully and dident put it back on correctly when they did the timing belt, i have it timed exactly as the haynes manual said but ya never know, right?
ill try every notch and if it fires, i learned somthing new and will make my own diagram untill i rebuild it correctly, and if it dosent then i know i have burnt valves correct?
i would start it afterit sat for a day or two and it would smoke for a minute, wich tells me that the seals are worn and the valves them selfs probly have had there fair share of wear and tare...
why dident i think of that? lol
thanks a ton for your input!!
I would have to agree the timing is probably incorrectly set,or ur egr valve may be clogged up with carbon. To see if the egr is shot just remove it and clean all the junk off with carb clnr and a wire brush and make sure the metal pintal that goes up and down moves freely,if the diaphram inside which u can not see is gone vac will b reduced or not work .If after doing the above just pull the vac line off and the car will run smooth indicating the egr is worn out.I doubt the egr is the main problem, leaning more towards the timing issue and checking the egr is a good idea any way since the part is cheap in price and napa definitely sells them for old jbodys.U did go by the averaging method for timing? disconnect the 4 prong elect plug to put the car in bypass and check it and adjust the distrib to the correct degree right.U know the car is not running just turning over while u set the distrib to align the mark to the correct degree I hope. The timing is so corny on old jbods but ,thats the way it has to be done versus the new school way just start it and adjust the distrib on some that is and ur good.OK I hope u can use any of this info.
