I think the insides of the muffler are coming apart. Sometimes at idle there is an awful vibration/rattle from the back of the car. The noise goes away at any RPM above idle. I checked the muffler heat shield but it is tight and no rattle there. If I put my hand over the end of the tailpipe the noise goes away so I'm assuming my muffler's baffles are coming apart (the muffler looks ok from the outside). All hangers and brakets are tight. Spare tire and jack tight too. My question is has anyone else had problems with their stock muffler? It's a 2002 base model OHV 5-speed Cavalier.
God bless America.
Are you sure it's not just your muffler rattling against something?

i agree, put a few new pieces of rubber and a clamp or 2 on there, its simple .
I doubt a 2002 muffler would already be coming apart. It's gotta be something in the suspension of the muffler system.

I dont know how the Cavalier system is routed, but on my car it was the same thing and my exhaust was rattling against my track bar in the rear.
Check to see if its rattling against any suspension components. I guarantee its rattling against something.
^ that's my suggestion too

i get this wierd small rattle at take off it sounds like theres something loose, and at firts i thought it was the flat nut looking thing for the spare tire bolt thing, but i ended up taking that out, and it's still there..... i was thinking that it might be muffler, but i left that alone, considering i am getting my new exaust put on shortly....

When you think the guts got loose inside a muffler...
Just bang it with a rubber headed mallet...
And, just keep using the mallet on the other parts...
Ahaaa....you'll pinpoint the problem...
