Car won't start...
Friday, February 24, 2006 5:19 AM
This morning my car (03 Cavalier) decided it didn't want to start. Engine cranks, but will not turn over. I know I have a marginal factory battery that I was planning on replacing. But, this doesn't seem like a battery issue to me. I'm thinking fuel pump (I'm not hearing it when I turn the key to the "on" position). Is there anything else I should consider? Like a relay or fuse? Please let me know if there are any common issues that I'm overlooking..?

fuses.

Check your relay.

I had the same problem not too long ago, it was bad wiring to the fuel pump.

Is the fuel pump relay located in the fuse box? If not, where is it?

its in the relay box under the hood near the battery.

Okay lets start with the basics.

You said you assume the battery is good.

Noe you need fuel, spark and compression.

Lets assume you have compression because the car is fairly new, most likely not to many miles on it.

Okay you need to find out am I missing spark or am I missing fuel?

You can use a spark tester, if you have spark than you most likely dont have fuel, only other problem is the starter itself.

I would then check residual fuel pressure, fuel volume and condition.

good luck

Ok, I checked the fuses...all look good as far as I can tell. I went ahead and got a new fuel pump relay...that didn't change anything. I'm not hearing the fuel pump come on when I turn the key. Any more things to check for? I'm stuck.

Okay so you dont hear the fuel pump come on? Check the connections at the fuel pump, tight, excessive corrosion build up, ya know excessive corrosion creates high resistance, means littel or not currentl flow.

I'm assuming that I'll have to lower the tank to get to the electrical connectors on the fuel pump? Is there anywhere else along the way that I should check too?
Update.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their help. Of course, it was the fuel pump. Got it replaced and I'm good to go again.

So, did you have to replace the entire "module "or just the pump - I was told I had to replace the entire module and I don't want to say how much it cost me..
Let me put it this way - I thought I bought a Cavalier, not a Corvette.
