Re-intalling timing chain after head gasket?
Wednesday, February 22, 2006 1:44 PM
1996 Z24 Auto

ok i am doing my head gasket and in my manual it tells me to re-intall my timing chain the opposite of removal...how do i know its timed right? Do i even need to remove the cam gears to change the head gasket?? Should i just mark the cam gears and chain before removal?

Also, any other suggestions or tips for doing this damn thing would be appreciated. How long did it take you guys do do it. Im not a noob when it comes to working on cars, i have pulled the head on my buddys integra, and i do pretty much all my own maintaining and performance based installs.

There are dowel pins you line up, and then you know its timed right. You have to have Cylinder 1 at TDC I believe, then line up the dowels on the cams and install the chain. The information can be found here:

Under "Secret Cam Swap"

I think you will have to remove the cam gears because you'll need to take the cam towers off to get to the head bolts. That means removing the cam completely. Felpro makes good gaskets, I'd go with that if you are just doing a stock replacement. You might also want to look at getting new headstuds.

i dunno, i've always had problems with fel-pro on the V8 in our dirt car, put a bad taste in my mouth, imp, anning on doing a head gasket on my 2.4 soon, and i can tell u ur gonan need more that just a head gasket

my suggestion(this is also wat im going) go to advance, and get sa full head set, it includes ALL the gaskets u will need to do a head gasket job, and also get a head bolt kit. the gasket set is round $220, head bolts are round $20. u cant just get a head gasket and slap it on in a 2.4. while ur at it, and u have it apart, might as well change the water pump unless it was recenlty changed, b/c when they go they are a BITCH to replace.

What brand would you recoment?

if that's the case I am not getting fel-pro.
so that's 220 for head kit, 20 for head bolts, plus 300 for a new head if its cracked
That's 600.00 dollars just in parts + labor
Labor would be another 800
