Broken Crank

Figured out what was wrong with the Z24. It would crank but very fast like only half the engine was turning. Well it turns out that the timing chain was still on and it didn't jump time. I turned the crank with a socket on the bolt and it turned so I thought at first it was something else. Couldn't figure out why it wouldn't run for the life of me.

The crank broke at the back after the #4 cylinder. So the starter turns the flywheel but the crank is broken so the flywheel doesn't turn the crank. That explains why it cranks so fast since the starter can turn the flywheel VERY easily.

So now I got a quote from the local Chevy dealer. $900 labor to replace the engine. $1000 for a used 2.4L w/ 62k miles. Or I can buy a crankshaft kit from Advance for $218.00 plus a $34.00 core charge and I guess I'm going to have to find a friend with a cherry picker so I can pull the motor out and replace the crank, rod, and main bearings.

What do you guys think I should do? I don't really have $2000 to spend on this car so I'm hoping that I can get one of my friends to loan me a cherry picker and give me a hand yanking this motor out. I have an engine stand so once we bolt the engine to the stand and turn it over it should only take a short time to remove and replace the crank.

Ok, I just saw the car personally since my girlfriend had it towed into the Chevy dealer. Its actually borken between Cyl #1 and #2. It only has 30-40 psi compression in cylinders 2-4. So its got bent valves also. Screw the crank kit. I'm going to just look for a used engine and put a new timing tensioner on it, new oil pan gasket, swap my ignition and sensors over, and install it in the car.

$2000.00 is way to much, I mean the car is nice but I don't want to put $2000.00 into it. Its not a show car or anything like that.

I've heard these engines have their share of problems. Are weak cranks one of them or is this just a fluke? Is this a cast iron crank? I doubt its forged.
