how can i tell if my fuel pump is dead.. my car cranks but wont ignite .. i dont know if its the ignition or the fuel pump maybe? it happened overnight and it was reallly cold.. but its been cold before and NEVER had this kind of problem.
How much gas was in your tank? I'm betting condensation froze and you have some ice in there. Go get some dry gas or water remover and dump it in. True your stuck till it
thaws a little but after you use this stuff you shouldn't have the problem again. Just dump a bottlle in every time you fill up if its that cold where you are. They cost like 75 cents a bottle or so. So its not like its gonna break you.
Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.
hmmm .. this is possible..
i had pack of pop in the car and i forgot about it.. it expoded all over my back seat lol.
but it was frozen still today and no stains .. its -10 now but it was -17 (1 Fahrenheit) two days ago
and when it froze i had less then 1/4 tank .. probably like 1/8th .. but then i added more fuel
fill it up.. DONT keep trying to crank it without more gas.. put a good couple gallons before you start to crank it.
ive been trying to start it for quite a bit.. could have i ruined something else? i wont keep trying untill i put more fule and the water remover
do you hear the fuel pump hum when you turn the key to the on position?...don't try to start it, but just turn the key on and listen a humming noise coming from the fuel pump.
Save a tree...Eat a beaver!
you could check fuel pressure...but you would have to rig something up at the filter with a guage on it.....do you hear the pump whine when you put the key in the on position.....you could aslo check fuel pump amperage also....check amperage across the fuse or across the relay....if you do the amp test on the pump youre looking between 4-6 amps.....this tes should only be done with the key on.....so for anyone else that does this test with cars that run, you should only do it while in th on position...not with the vehicle running
check your fuel pump relay, just sawp it with your A/C relay, and see if she fires, if she does, get a new relay

yes def could if you didnt already i remember i tried for like 5min one nite now my pump is weak or something it wont run below 1/4 tank
turn key foward but dont start, if u can hear the pump working its good.

You have to determine if it's ignition or fuel. Check for spark 1st, if you have spark, then it must be fuel related. Try spraying starter fluid in the throttle body to see if you can get it to run, if it does you've found a fuel system problem. Put a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail, if you don't get manufacturer's pressure, it could be the pump, a blocked fuel filter, fuel line, return line, defective regulator, etc. Check the easy stuff 1st. Also, make sure you have vacuum @ the regulator. good luck and keep us posted.
PS, the colder the temperature the greater problems with electrical system. Make sure all visible connections are clean and in good condition including grounds.
yesturday i checked for spark.. i am getting nothing.. but also i took out the spark plug and i couldnt smell much fuel it wasent wet or anything..
i even put the spark plug and put it in the wire and looked for a spark nothing..
how do i get to the throttle body ?
hmm if i am not getting a spark maybe its the coil distributor pack .. cause i doubt its all 4 wires are bad.
also i did hear a humming when i turne the car off, like the pump was shutting off or something in the back
could it be bad COIL too?
did you ground the spark plug electrode to the block when you checked for spark? the throttle body is connected to the air cleaner via a duct.
yeh i toched the "hook" part of the spark to the block and all over.. and no sparks at all..
yes it could be a bad coil. Have you checked your electric wires and connections?
which wires?, the spark plug wires? i doubt all 4 would be dead,,. cause i tested them all..
i am stuck without a car now @!#$, and i dont want to tow it its gonna cost me like 100$ to get it towed and tested.
anyone else got some ideas what i should do.. i was thinking of replacing the coil.. but i got no idea where to start .. from the top or under the car to get to it.
Start with the battery cables/connections and all grounds, then, all ignition and fuel related connections. Don't know where your coil is, but try tracing the spark plug wires back. Get a haynes manual, it can be helpful in troubleshooting (wiring diagrams, component specs.). good luck
your coilS are on the driver's side of the head, mounted on their side
do you have a check engine light on the dash.....not saying that you have a check engine light for codes but, if you dont have a check engine light on when you put the key in the on position than you have problem with the PCm not getting any power ie: blown fuse or fusible link...i say this because you said you had so spark and the plugs seemed dry...
my advice is try the crank postion sensor... i'm not sure how or if there is a way to test it but mine when out just like you said.... over night. if the sensor goes bad your will get no spark at all! the part cost me like $20 i think... try it
Hott98Z, if the crank position sensor is bad, would you still be able to hear the fuel pump "buzzing"? Or could it cause it to not come on at all? (not trying to hijack the thread, just having some similar problems of my own)
yes the fuel pump will still come on... but if you test for spark and get nothing all at, thats what i would guess it is
