ok guys i tried a search but i am having no luck please help me. ok when i was on my way home today on the e-way i pulled into a rest area and i notied that coolent was coming out by the passenger front tire.so i opened the hood and i could not find a leak. so i drove the rest of the way home and when i get there i open the hood with the car running and i see that the reservoir (spelling) is full and coming out of the cap so i turn the car off and with in seconds the coolent tank is empty.. do you guys think i have a thermostat stuck closed. or maybe something else.. and if it is the thermostat where is it located. i have a 98 z24 5 speed.2
Well JOSH, It could be a few things. I will try to narrow it down for ya. Is youre temp gauge over heating? does youre car take a long time to warm up in the morning? How long has the thermostat and coolant been in the car? You could have a blocked rad in the coolong channels. Best bet to do is get a new 180 thermo stat, Some new coolant. I would recommend getting youre cooling system a flush treatment too.
Good Luck
my car temp gauge did not over heat...however it did get to about 3/4 when i got off the eway. and no i have never had a problem with the car warming up it warms up normal and stays right in the middle untill today..and i just bought the car used so i have no idea how long the fluid has been in the car nor do i no about the thermostat. by the way where is the thermostat located...by they man thanks for the help...josh
Josh,
was the fan running when you opened the hood?
Alont
umm no the fan was not running...and it was hot enough where the fan would normally.
hm 98 Z bout time for a waterpump id say.
well i dont think that it is the water pump....i am pretty sure that it is the thermostat...does anyone on the board know where it is on the 2.4
On the backside of the engine, near the water pump. You need to remove the exhaust mani.
But if the fan SHOULD be running, why wasn't it?
I would be checking the fan system first, then find the leak.
You say the temp indication was normal on the eway, then went up as you came off.
This is to be expected as you lost the increased airflow through the radiator as soon as you slowed coming off the eway, this is when the fan should come on to help cool the system.
[This was the first problem I had in 1999 within two days of buying my first (used) cavalier 2.2. As soon as I left the eway the "Check gauges " came on and the temp shot up into the red. My electric fan had seized, a new fan solved the problem]
When the car stops the engine is hot and "heat soaks" the cooling system (The excess heat from the engine is absorbed by the coolant. Normally the fan would be on and will sometimes run for a while after the engine is switched off. This is the normal procedure to cool down the engine, in your case it didn't happen and you lost your coolant through the leak noticed earlier.
Try rapidly squeezing a water hose to see if you can pinpoint the leak although the location may indicate a water pump
Good Luck

id put money on the waterpump do u know where the weep hole is? check it
^^^^
But the fan should have been on
