Thursday, February 16, 2006 10:20 PM
Just bought a 98 Cavi Z and it sat for 5 months before i bought it, everything that was bad has been replaced but the only problem i have now is that the tranny grinds like hell at high rpm's, but regular driving it does not....just want to know is it the syncro's going bad or is it the clutch cylinder...dont wanna spend unecessary money...or does anyone around houston tx have a low mileage tranny for sell? any help would be greatly appreciated........

Have you checked the manual trans fluid? On my 97 sunfire, it's buried under the brake master cyl. I have to lean over from the passenger side to get to the dipstick.

Yeah i already changed the fluid, i had it flushed and changed at a local shop, would going with thicker fluid help? Or is it just the syncros on their way out?

I'd explore other options before putting the wrong grade lube in the trans.

Does the noise happen in all gears?

Does the sound follow engine rpm or wheel speed?

Can you get the same noise in neutral?

Could it be something other than the trans, like PS pump or AC clutch?

Dude, it would really suck if you spent the time/cash to replace the trans and still had the same noise.

it def. sounds like syncro's i heard its not always good to change fluid in old trannys especially FLUSH.. try this

in the gear it grinds going into (if all) rev it before u shift wait like half a second before going to the next gear. go like 2nd- neutral for 0.5 sec then 3rd if it doesnt do it prolly a syncro

if its all gears could be shifter cables or something bent?
