engine dying
Friday, February 17, 2006 8:33 PM
Having some issues with my engine, when the engine is started from "cold" i can put it in reverse but, once in drive it will accelerate for a few seconds the the RPMS will drop and it will start going up and down, like it is about to stall.
When i sit at a stop light it wont stay at a constant idle, it bounces between 500 and 1000.
When i pull into a parking spot i put it in park and the engine stalls out and dies before i even touch the key.

I am sitting at just about 80k miles right now.
Is there anything glaring that could possibly be wrong, i think it is probably something electrical but, i dont know where to start. I took off the IDI cover and the ignition cover cleaned it up and inspected for craked boots or burn marks or anything but there wasnt anything. So it passed visual inspection, just want some idea before i go to the dealership, and get raped just to have them say "there ain't nothin wrong wit it, $60 please."

The first thing I would be doing is checking my fuel pressure.

Check your IAC valve. Should be on the right side of the throttle body held in with 2 torx screws. Clean that up good with some throttle body cleaner. See if that helps. And if you've never done so before, do a SeamFoam treatment.

i have the HO mani swap and TB, i just put in a new IAC valve about 2 weeks ago.

The fuel pressure i was also thinking of maybe a fuel filter??? I replaced it a while ago cant remember the milage at the time though. But, its around time for a new one.

do you have bosch +4 spark plugs? that could be your problem right there.
i have the a 2.2 from 2000.. i had this problem before and it was pretty major.. i stalled twice in 3 months. I was getting really worried.

I replaced my spark wires, my coil packs ( it's different in the 2.4.. i gues you just have a housing don't you ), and plugs to ngk's and while there is still a noticeable dip in rpms, it no longer kills my car, and my idle seems steadier.

FYI i have 76k mi. on mine.

Sadly, no more..

could be the map sensor or maybe the tps...good luck...

acdelco platinum plugs, replaced the TPS a week before the IAC valve, the only one i havent changed is the MAP sensor might look into it. I would never use +4 plugs they are nothing but crap. I am gonna get the fuel filter changed and see if that helps.

we will see, i changed the fuel filter it did a lot better yesterday but, it started doing it again. i might try the MAP sensor next week after pay-day. Ima get it scanned and see if im trowing any codes or something that isnt triggering a CEL.

well after speanding lots of money on crap that wasnt the problem. (thank God i didnt get the MAP sensor) It turns out to be the brake booster vacuum line, it was collapsing and obviously bogging the motor down after i went from brake to gas, im gonna work some routing and stuff just take a little time but at least it is an easy/cheap fix

I don't understand why a collapsed brake vacuum line would cause you problems, seems like it would be just like plugging a vacuum line. Do you think when the hose opened the booster required so much vacuum that it deprived the fuel pressure regulator? You may want to check your fuel pressure regulator. Good luck.

i dug up the stock (hard) vaccuum line for the FPR. It seemed to help a lot we will see what happends tomorrow driving in town with stoplights.

Chris, how did you make out? If you think it's a vacuum problem, put a gauge on it and pinch off lines until you find it. I know some old fords have a central vacuum tree off the intake manifold, maybe GM does as well, this would be a good place to start.

I still havent figured it out, pulled all the plugs today, they are fine, normal colors and such, little richness but, i knew that already.

If you havent figured it out already I have done the HO mani and TB swap, but it has been fine for many tousands of miles so im thinking its not related to the manifold swap at all.

I have now switched EVERY vaccuum line back to stock, equivalent, or better. I think the next step is taking off the TB and cleaning everything real good around the IAC sensor and getting it "spotless" for the most part. We will see if that helps, if not i will find a wall to beat my head against

Hvae you checked the fuel pressure yet? Also, could the intake manifold or throttle body be loose and leaking?
Re: engine dying

got it finally, ran my hand around my TB, piece of TB gasket hanging out, so ima replace the gasket and it should be good.

thats not it bro try repairing the iac sensor n let me know just cause im having the same exact probs with mine. 2.2l of junk
and what was the deal with the brake vaccum line? cause im also the same probs but when i go to stop it feels like my brakes are already applied in the rear, so stopping is almost not an option. i can smell them burning up like im ridin around with the parkin brake on, WTF? and the high idle up n down drives me fukin nuts. so whatever you find out let me know.

your problem sounds different from what i was having. I definantly have a vaccuum leak though you can hear it load and clear now, i am gonna replace the gasket tomorrow and wish for the best.

The only thing wrong with the brake booster hose was that it had collapsed because of the extreme bend i had to put in it due to the HO mani swap, the heater hose i was using collapsed, i got a hose meant for vaccuum and that problem is solved.

Chris, Did the throttle body gasket fix your problem?
