HELP! Ecotec Trouble
Saturday, February 18, 2006 5:55 AM
ok i just recently installed am oil prssure gauge in my cavalier and ran it to the back of the cylinder head. i tefloned all the fittings and checked it 100 times and no leaks. well i go up a hill and all of a sudden i hear a light knocking that gets louder and louder so i pull over and the dam line completely blew off! oil was all over the place as well as all up the road where i was just driving. so i put the stock plug back in and refil the oil and try to fire it. it fires but its knocking horribly now and i don't know what it could be. is my engine totally blown or can it be fixed some how? any help would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like there is some damage. most likely a damaged or spun main bearing. if so you will need a complete rebuild. the motor most likely isnt trashed, but will need a bunch of work.

If its knocking no kidding it is trashed.

As far as a rebuild, it isnt to hard. I rebuilt one Ecotec, just like most other engines. Becareful with the timing chain, lots of plastic parts for guides and all, got those pretty mixed up and it took two days to figure that out about.

oil is the blood of the engine, and unfortunately blood loss is a leading cause of death with any engine.

it doesn't take a lot to put one down. But the good news is, the damage isn't irreparable.

if you can't have any downtime, a spare engine can be found in most junkyards for around $500. Depending on what area you're from, I know a junkyard that has ecotec engines for that price (where I got mine for my swap)

rebuilding the engine that has the knocking would be a great learning experience, if I were you I'd take that engine and build it up with some nice internals. But in the meantime, swap in another ecotec so you can get around.

then when the built engine is done, swap it back in... but thats me.

PM me if you need the info for the salvage yard... I'm in NJ and the place i'm talking about is near Rahway NJ.
