I've been having difficulty with my EVAP System for a while. The check engine light comes on and the code it gives me is PO440 and that is 'Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction' I've tried a few things to correct it, but no luck. Does anyone know about this stuff?
Well I tightened the gas cap, maybe I didn't tighten it enough or something (I'll tighten it as much as I can), and my dad checked the vacuum in one of the hoses and it was normal. And the canister is really hard to get to but it looks ok. And I tried using premium gas, that works for the first have of the tank. (it keeps the light off that long) but it just comes back on. And I can delete the code with the scanner but it comes back on of course. I was told that to replace the canister would only cost about 15$ and that maybe the valve inside of it is broken or something? I just don't know if that's the problem because it could be like 20 different things.
Hmmm, my canister is in the front on the passenger side inside the fender..
a p0440 is an evap leak (i believe)
Have the system smoke tested. There's a machine that puts smoke through the evap system and pours out the leak. You also need a scanner to activate the purge solenoid.
On the 2002 the dealer replaced the purge valve solenoid.
the most common problem is a loose gas cap or bad gas cap. But you covered that already.
Yeah, I've heard about the smoke test.. I guess I may have to resort to that. Thank you
And 'box on the rear axle'.. do you mean the fuel filter? eh no thats not a box, i guess i dont know what you're talking about. Would a bad O2 sensor cause the problem?
The box in the back is an evap canister. and the 02 sensor will not cause the problem.
P0440 usually means a non-sealing gas cap.
Simply tightening it won't do anything if it isn't sealing internally. Try replacing the cap first, it's cheap and easy
On mine, I had a crack right at the front canister, where the hoses connect to it. I epoxyed it, and all was well...til I changed the motor, and broke the connection again
Let us know how the gas cap works.
New filler neck fixed the problem on mine. They rot out at the top
