Winshield wipers stuck in middle of windshield??
Sunday, February 12, 2006 10:47 AM
Ok, i was gettin lazy and i turned on my wipers to clean the snow off my windshield so i could wipe the rest off. Well the snow got packed down where they stop and when i turned them off they stopped in the middle of my windshield. If i try to push them down they just come on even if i turned them off and go back to the middle....how do i fix this?

I can almost garuntee you bent the connection rod where your wiper arms are connected.

Its better to let your car warn up, put your defroster on full blast and clean around your wiper blades Frist with a scraper or brush as to just turning them on.

Always nice to find the question you want to ask on this site has already been asked - about half a year ago and still no answer.

Any one have anything a little more comprehensive.

you just take the bolts off where your wipers attach and rotate the gear back where its supposed to stop.

and if that doesnt work, its the wiper trans that needs to be replaced

Ya, I have the same problem and can't figure out how the hell to fix it. But i figured a little trick to get them to go almost all the way down. When they get stuck halfway up the window put your arm out the drivers side and pull it towards you, you should feel the tenision on them let go and then put on your wipers on like normal and ta da! Back to the bottom they go! Well kinda. And I'll probably get a dont do that reply to this post, but they're screwed anyways, so who the hell cares!

This is a funny topic, I see so many people driving down the road, With their window wipers stopped half way across their windshields, LOL.......... I know shouldnt laugh, Cause it could happen to me some day. I figure as well, Something has with the wiper motor arm is bent or motor gear just got stripped, I think its a plastic Nylon gear in those wiper motors, Cheaper using plastic then metal.

Good Luck with youre findings.

No, busted wiper transmission. Seen it so many times, and people do it them selves. When it is full of ice, they turn the wipers on, and it doesnt have enough force to break the ice. Well that pressure is going to make something snap, and it is always the wiper trans.

old old old very old and common problem....which it sucks cuz this happened to me on my old 97 cav.....did the same as you push it down, and they will come back up....did this so many times I broke something and they stopped working...lol....so I had to get one from at the local junker from a 2001 sunfire which it cost me ~$35, easy install........the other solution i've heard is take it to the dealer so they reset the wiper motor ...something like that.....my 2 cents

One more time with feeling

The wiper system is computer controlled, (the right lever on the steering column is just a dumb switch, no magic there) The
connectors that goes to the wiper moter, is controlled via contacts and a contact disk is gear driven off of the wipermoter itself.

Theres a portion of the contact surface which is purposely cut away. This open portion of the contact tells the computer where the wipers are, in relation to
the rotation (or path) that the moter takes. The contact wheel takes 2 complete turns for 1 'full' sweep of the windshield. They also
have a built in thermal overload. When an obstruction prevents the moter from turning (ie your hand grabbing onto the wiperblade)
the overload kills the current to the moter to protect the windings from burning out. When the system does re-activate, (as soon as it cools down)
it will immidiately look for the 1st gap in that contact disk (the one I was talking about earlier). But since its counts 2 gaps per pass, it (the wipers) return
to the middle of the windshield.

Make sence?

What you need to do to reset them, WITHOUT doing any MORE damage, is turn the ignition on, and activate the wipers on a low long setting.
Go under the hood, and as soon as the wipers pass into the "stowed" position, dissconnect the negitive on the battery. This should reset the
computer, and put your wipers back in thier proper position.

Forcing your wiper arms isn't reccomended by hand, (you can if you want, but you will find out the hard way) as you will do damage to the internals
(the moter turns the wiper shaft via a worm gear) you will strip the input shaft, then You will definately need to get another assembly.

Anything beyond what I have stated here is a special case. Some wipers wont start, then they wont stop, stop suddely, screw up, fall off (rare one that)
Look at the systems involved (console switch, wiper moter, wiper assembly, wiper relay, fuse) if theres anything wrong, chances are its one of the
players in that system. Just start from the most likely, ie fuse, and work towards the most difficult ie. replacing the assembly.

If you have checked everything, and it still acts funny, then I would look at the wiring, *especially* the connections in the steering column, for those who
have a tilt wheel, Tilting the wheel when its sub-zero tends to be stiff because the wiring is struggling to bend and it can pull wires out of
connectors, trust me, theres nothing more annoying then an over-energetic interior light.

cheers.

Did anyone ever figure this out? I tried taking the wipers off today and rotating them back to their normal position, but that didn't work.

Coop.. some good information there... I just spent 20 minutes replacing my girlfriends wiper motor and about THREE hours to get it to stop at the right spots... first the pulse setting would rest in the "up" position between wipes.. so i fixed that, but then the wipers would park in the up position... after rotating the transmission about 100 times and fooling around with it I got it to work... but only cause I got lucky. If I knew how that transmission functioned, then I probably would have no problems, but I have NO idea how that damn thing works. Not to mention the instructions that the AutoZone website gives are rediculous AutoZone Instructions the first few steps of reinstalling the new motor are confusing... according to them you are installing the Wiper Crank Arm THREE freaking times!!!! UGH!!

So... maybe someone can shine some light on the PROPER procedure on replacing a wiper motor so when I have to do it in my Sunfire (I hope I don't though) I will have an easier time... and also for others here too which may need that info.. maybe we can make it a sticky or something.

I ended up getting the whole assembly from pick-n-pull for like 15 bucks. Took about 20 minutes to replace it. Plugged it in and it worked fine and the wipers parked correctly. I did this after spending about 2 hours messing with it.

I took it all apart and tried resetting the position with no luck.

I ended up going to the local junkyard and getting the whole wiper assembly from a Cavalier... 15 bucks and they work perfect.

that same thing just happened to me last night, it was raining and right in the middle of the cycle the drivers side wiper went so far over to the left i thought it was going to fall right off the car. The blade wound up coming up against a corner of the drivers side window, i tried to fix it but only suceeded in bending the arm instead. I have a feeling it's the motor though, cause the passenger side wiper works fine. Does anyone know, is the wiper motor a dealer only part or can you pick stuff like that up at your local napa or autozone etc. Heard someone mention the junkyard for dirt cheap may have to go that route if all else fails, 2004 Ls sedan 2.2 eco.
