Stalling at stop

I have a 2002 Cavalier with the 2200 motor. The car runs beautifully while cruising but that is not the case at a stop. The rpms tend to surge and then drop below the .5 thousand mark. A few seconds later the car will stall. I recently installed new spark plugs thinking that they might be the problem. They helped but the car still stalls. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank You for your time

I've been dealing with this issue as well. Although in 3 months i've only stalled twice - still, that's not acceptable.

I have a 2200 with a mere 72k miles on it. I had bosch +4's in it previously, and replaced those with ngk v-powers and that helped. I also got accel wires and MSD coil packs and after installation my idle has been pretty steady and my acceleration has been a little better - overall my engine sounds and feels a lot more healthy. I hear that coil packs go out on j-bodies quite often, so if your spark plugs / wires are cool and you're over 60k miles or so, the packs could help you out.

Either ways, buying all 3 things will run you less than $150. It's also money well spent because you'd be restoring lost performance, too.

Sadly, no more..

since u recently ruled out a spark problem, how about fuel... changed the fuel filter lately???

how's the throttle body valve? cleaned it out recently as well? might pull pcv & blast it w/ some carb cleaner...

but main thing's fuel i guess, & how about a trouble code check?

I took the car in and the dealership said that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the car. They claimed they hooked it up to a machine that would diagnose any problem possible. They drove it and of course it did not exemplify any of the problems.

if they can't duplicate the prob w/ you in the passenger seat to say, "there, see! I noticed it now!"

try the fuel filter change... my sis exhibited this prob when her car hit the ~70,ooo mark... partial clogged filter had done it. what's the manual says, change every 30,ooo miles or 2 years...

may also wanna see about carbon cleaner as well<shrugs>
