idle issue related to AC
Friday, February 10, 2006 3:02 PM
i did a search and didnt find an issue the same as mine.

my idle with the AC off is totally fine at all times.

if i turn the AC on, it jumps 1,000+ rpm every 30 seconds or so then drops back after about 5 seconds of the higher idle.

thanx folks, and i sux if didnt search good enough.

umm, i think that's normal... in most cars i've been in... not just on GM...

edit: there's a bunch of circuits that will boost the idle to compensate for the temp load of the ac compressor load... then cycles back down as needed

ive never had a single car raise the idle like that when the A/C kicks on, they normally bog down for a second, then the PCM compensates and take it back to noemal idle, never had one that went UP

yeah i know. its a year 2000 2200 if that helps.

all cars i have been in do the normal rpm jump for about 2 seconds right when you turn it on but then it adjust back down and is fine. however, mine doesnt do this anymore.

you turn the AC on and it does the normal rpm jump and then drops. but then it cycles every 30 seconds it will jump rpms again and then stay up for about 5 seconds and then drop back down for 30 seconds. and will do this continuosly while the AC is on.

its perfectly normal the computer is trying to compensate for the load u just put n the system.

if it is perfectly normal, then how come it JUST started doing this? and that EVERY car i have ever been in DOESNT do it.

to repeat how it is doing this:

i have a feelign some of you think I am describing the normal RPM jump when u FIRST turn on AC. i am NOT talking about this.

I could have the AC on for 30 minutes straight and within those 30 minutes every 30 seconds the RPMs jump and then drop. then entire time all the time.

i repeat every 30 seconds the entire time the AC is on the rpms jump and then drop jump and then drop jump and then drop.

this is a year 2000 2200 sunfire and i have had it since late 99 and it has NEVER done this ever.

i dont think its normal to do it continuously, you might have a compressor problem

this will be a low refrigerant symptom, the A/C compressor has to come on more frequently to keep refrigerant pressures high enough to be usable. have your A/C system, reclaimed, then recharged, and have them put dye in it, as there is most likely a leak in the system
