Is the Dex-cool GM uses pink or orange?
Thursday, February 09, 2006 5:53 PM
I've been gettin the low coolant light the last couple days on my Z24, and I want to top off the coolant with some Dex-Cool until I get a chance to get a radiator flush.

When I look at the coolant in my car, it looks pink to me, but the closest Dex-Cool that any of the stores around here have is orange Dex-Cool. I don't want to mix colors so does anyone know where I can find the pink Dex-Cool? Or is the coolant that came stock in my car really orange? One of the parts stores told me that some people think its pink, but its actually orange.

Its orange man; dex-cool is orange. Just dip your finger in the resvouir and put your finger on a napkin or paper towel and the color will be orange; just had my coolant flushed like 2 months ago in my 98 sunfire 2200.

Ok, cool. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't mixing 2 colors together. I know some people don't like Dex-Cool, and then others do. I'm just gonna stick with it though because it hasn't caused me any problems so far.

If I top off my coolant, do I need to add a 50/50 mix(Dexcool & distilled water) or do I just add Dex-Cool by itself?

I read your reply and I was like... word. But then you said it "sux" There is nothing wrong with dex cool!

It lasts for 5 years. As opposed to 1-2 from the old green coolant.

Perfect.

It may "last" 5 years then why drain, flush and fill your radiator atleast once a year?

say what?
You flush and refill your dex cool at least once a year?
Our 2002 is going strong on the OE dex cool. May need to change it soon.
If it had the green stuff, you'd need to change it 4 times in that period.

If you're topping off, just use str8 coolant.

side note: yes change this dexcool/distilled water mixture every 5 years, regardless of how many miles u drive (unless u dirve 100,ooo miles before the 5 year period <cabbies>

ps: prestone yellow coolant for ALL makes/models are just as good... same 5 year/100,ooo mile change interval. =dexcool in yellow color...

nooooooooo

prestone/yellow
dexcool/orange

very similar properties...

as noted if u click on the nico discussion/ i have linked BOBISTHEOILGUY thread there...
read that & spread the knowledge!

On another note: there's a shelf-life to premixed coolant/distilled water products ~2 years, while str8 up 100% coolant has an indefinite shelf life... another Cliff Claven fact.cheers reference

I found today that I'm gonna need to add a decent amount of Dex-cool to get the level up to the Full Cold line so should I add some distilled water with the Dex-cool that I'm adding?

Earl A, I know you said to just add straight coolant, but is that only if I'm just topping off? I ended up needing more than I thought I did. I just wanna do this as a temporary fix before I get a flush in the next week or two.

i'd go w/ custom's statement; u r not deviating that much from 50/50 mixture. u will b ok in this area.

the thing i'm worried about is that it was soo low to introduce air into the system... leads to hotspots & in some threads, air + the dexcool mixture= sludge...BOO!

I'd find the coolant/air bleed valve, open it up while cold (duh), & keep pouring until a steady stream of orange pisses out of that thing... it was easy to fing the bolt on my sis's 2.2L engine. dunno where it is on the 2.4L

I think the level in my reservoir was about an inch & a half below the Full Cold line. I went ahead & bought some distilled water & mixed some of it with the Dex-Cool before I added it. I just added the coolant into the reservoir & then closed it back up.....I didn't mess with anything else.

Am I gonna be OK, or should I look for the coolant/air bleed valve? I've driven the car twice since I added the coolant & I didn't have any issues.....they were both really short trips though.
