Hey all. I posted this in the performance forum the other day, and it was suggested that I move it here. A couple things that have been suggested are the timing, fuel system, and plugs and wires. Here's the original post.:
I was wondering what could cause the 2200 not to be able to rev to 5600 rpm? It's fine to 3500, makes it reluctantly to 4k and just won't go any farther. I got in touch with a place that installs re-manufactured or used engines, but it's painful to think about the amount of money they want (2300-3400) for a stock engine, besides, I don't even know if it needs it. If it does in fact need a rebuild, what might the average cost of labor be. I'll probably buy my own parts and ask for a mild port & polish as well. Unfortunately, I lack the facilities to do any of the work myself, so I'll have to go to a shop. When I talked to the guy, he said it might be a timing issue, and I do have a strange kind of "chirpy" rattle emanating from the passenger side, just can't tell if it's inside the car or under the hood. I also have a post in my regional forum asking about shops in my area. II'mjust looking for a good option to get what I (might) need with some performance work at the same time. 2300-3400 for a stock used/re-manufactured engine just seems way too expensive to me. Thanks.
BTW: The car currently has 177k miles on it and I just ran a fuel system cleaner which did help, but not much. It is also a 5spd. Just in case anyone needs to know. Thanks again.
The thread is in the performance forum entitled 2200 revs/rebuild options. Thanks for any info or advice.

Are you reving it in Nuetral or park? Cause there is a rev limiter you know.
I'm talking about while I'm driving. But it doesn't matter, either way it doesn't seem to want to go past 4k. After that, I can actually feel the engine getting all choked up.

Fuel pump sounds like its not keeping up with the fuel demands, which inturn limits your power and RPMs for that matter.
Makes sense to me. Any other possibilities? Just looking to get a bunch of ideas to look into all at once. Thanks.

I have a 98 2200 automatic; and have owned my car for 3 years now; and a three years ago i swear the car would not get past 4,000 or even come close, it was like 35,000 -4 wide open, no problems with the power being there; or anything like that.
But i noticed just a few months ago that my car can rev higher now; i gave her and had her at 5,000 in my automatic.
But yes, i heard there is a rev limiter; i am not sure what rpm it is set at; but if your car is working fine, without any problems; shy are you worrying about where it revs at; i mean yeah i see your point your curious to know why; but does your car still have them same power when you give her even though it only shows your tach getting up to 35,4000?
