Fuel Pressure? Fuel pump? fuel problem

well ever since ive had this car it WILL NOT start with less then a 1/4 tank on my drive way i have to put it in neutral and roll it down the hill and then start it with the front end pointing down ( 2.4L auto)

Also if im driving with a stedy foot with less then 1/4 tank it will stutter and such

lately iv always kept it above 1/4 tank but i know the gauge is not wrong because ive had it complelty on E only twice since ive owned it. the car has alot of miles so it could be anything

it only has a problem with 1/4 tank or less so i dont know if it has anything to do with some kind of pressure or a weak fuel pump?

i have 2 2.4's so i can swap some parts if its easy and you guys may think it will help except the fuel pump of course. but if theres anythings i can do or check let me know thanx

well after talking with dave in an IM it looks like its more towards a fuel pump. although i have no problems at ALL above 1/4 tank but i guess ill just keep it above 1/4 because i dont really wanna spend the money on a new fuel pump

Have you ever had any gas tank work done before, or has it been struck forcefully? I had a truck that did almost the same thing. There was a plastic device attached to the bottom of my tank that kinda protected the fuel from sloshing excessively. One day it decided it didn't want to be attached anymore and then if I didn't have enough fuel in my tank and hit the gas too hard it would sputter and want to stall because the fuel was moving around and my pump couldn't pick it very well. I'm not familiar with the tank that is on your car but if I had to guess I'd say something with the fuel pickup is messed up. Until you figure it out make sure to keep it above 1/4 tank because if the fuel pump is sucking air then it will probably go bad.

Check your gas tank for dents. There could be a dent and its keeping the float from going all the way down to empty.
