are our tachs usually off??

my car (97 sunfiregt 5speed) idles at like, 1250 or something like that, i havn't hit the rev limit yet cause the car stops making power before i get up that high, i'll usually shift about 6100 at the latest if im gettin on it. Tach seems to respond real well to what i do with the engine, but i just thought that i remembered hearing somewhere that someone's tach was offset like, 400rpms or something but i couldn't find more past post about this so i thought i'd ask.

ya mine is off by 200-300 rpm, i hook it to the snap-on scanner, and it says im idling at 800-900rpm, but tach will say 1000-1100rpm

i've checked EVERYTHING in the engine bay and i swear that car is like brand new. other than the p/s makin a small noise that might make you double-look at it there are no leaks anywhere. so i guess it's just the signal
